An Excellent & Solid Performance Oriented Digicam

This was Sony's top line digicam a few years ago and its esy to see why. Solid Black Aluminum Chassis and body. 4.1 Megapixel CCD with an excellent HAD focusing system. Outstanding battery life from the NP-FM50 Camcorder Battery. This camera can take a licking and produce excellent digital pictures day-in and day-out. It is really a work-horse digicam that is built for the long term. If you are looking for a decent back-up or Ebay digicam, this camera fits the bill nicely. You can find one easily on Ebay in the $150-$175.00 rangein excellent condition that will easily giveyou 3-4 years of additional usage. The only negaitve is that it takes Memory Sticks and the camera is kind-of bulky and heavy whencompared to the latest generation of competing digicams. You can't go wrong with this camera as Sony engineered this one to last for a very long time. You can even add a Sony External Flash for even more flexibility and power.

Excellent Camera with Bright Lense and accurate Focus

I have taken several shots with this camera in various kinds of lighting. From low light to very bright outdoor shots, this camera performs extremely well. It was in it's day, a top talent, and still is when compared to today's cameras that may cost a hundred dollars more. It operates very well as a point and shoot or if you desire to be in more control this camera is wonderful in various priority modes. Excellent placement of controls with a very intuitive menu system. I use the fine setting with +1 sharpness and get outstanding shots still today. Battery life is excellent as well. Movie mode by today's standards lacks a bit with limited resolution but certainly is easy to use for a quick movie. I think it is limited to 15 fps. Bottom line: shot in, shot out, this camera is very reliable with good metering and what I would say "bright colors".

  I'd buy it again.

Excellent quality photographs
Fairly easy to use, although not for a complete novice
Would suggest buying a large memory stick (depends on the resolution you want)
Has a fairly standard USB cable. I can use the same cable for my MP3 player and camera, which is useful
GREAT close photographs
You recharge the InfoLITHIUM M battery, so you don't burn through AA or AAA's like they are going out of fashion.
Overall... I'd buy it again.

This camera is top of the line. I have a Olympus and the difference in the resolution and color is very noticeable. I think this is a camera that has been sitting out there, since Sony discontinued it, at a very good buy. It will out perform many costing much more and is a professional. I am very glad I purchased this camera on eBay at a bargain.

  Great Camera/Excellent Quality
Review created: 10/25/06

I've owned many digital cameras and the DSC-S85 is one of the best. So many people are concerned with the high megapixel, which is cool if you are going to make poster size prints. The DSC-S85 has 4.1 megapixel which give you excellent quality 8x10 prints and larger. The lens is what you should be concerned with. The lens on the DSC-S85 are excellent quality, large Carl Zeiss glass lens which give you great clarity, sharpness and the colors are almost always right on. The camera has a good feel in you hand and is constructed very well for many years of dependable service. The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S85 is a great camera which preforms as well if not better then some of the newer and more expensive models. Excellent buy.

  Buying a second one
Review created: 10/25/06

I bought this camera over 4 years ago for around $500. I am a teacher who is in charge of my schools photography program, and every one of the cameras the school has purchased is garbage compared with this dated model. The pictures are excellent, which proves that megapixels means very little. The 4 mps on this camera are much better that 6 mps on newer, lower quality models. I'm buying a used one to keep at school so I can take some decent shots without having to lug mine back and forth. I think $150 seems very high though, which seems to be the average price on ebay.

  Great Old Camera
Review created: 03/07/09

3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My experience with these old Sony cameras led me to buy 4 of these DSC-S85s recently. I will probably end up giving them to my grandkids. I first owned a Sony DSC-S75 back in 2001 and still have it after taking about 8000 pictures. It has been dropped, it has been under water a couple of times and it still keeps going. I have also used a DSC-S85 at my office since 2002 so I have lots of experience with this line of cameras.

In addition to being rugged, they take great pictures because of the fine Carl Zeiss lens. Don't be fooled by the fact they only have 4 megapixels, that is overrated by advertisers. My granddaughter used my old S75 to take pictures for a 4-H project and enlarged one to 11x14 which won at our local county fair and went on to place high at the state fair. Some will also say the lens on these cameras is wobbly. Yes, they are for some reason, but that does not affect results at all.

These cameras can be used for good results set on automatic or you can control aperture, shutter and focus if you want to get creative. You can also get great close-ups with the macro setting.

One of the main drawbacks to these cameras is that the old style memory sticks are no longer being made. They can be found on eBay but the price is high.

These are great cameras but they are not a camera to be used if you want to shoot quickly. They take a while to get to shooting mode and then there is a slight delay when you press the shutter. If you can live with that you will get great results.

Another nice thing about the cameras is the battery life. They come with a rechargeable battery that just keeps going and holds a charge very well. Batteries and chargers are still readily available for them.

There are lots of things the camera will do but it takes for me time to figure out the settings other than the basics, which are very easy. It takes beautiful pictures.

I was a previous owner of a Sony S75 for many years. I recently lost that camera. I was very pleased with the S75. So I purchased a S85 with same features of the S75 but with 4.1 mp instead of the 3.3 mp of the S75. I am very well pleased with the S85. The pictures are sharp and the ease of operation makes this camera outstanding.

  Sony Digital Cyber Shot

I purchased this camera for my daughter because I own one as does my son and I love the convenience of the uploading, the sharing of memory sticks and the ease of using this camera. It is very easy to use, its not the lightest of digital cameras but the picures are phenomenal. The only drawback I see is the weight. I purchased mine brand new 3 years ago and am not looking for an upgrade at this time. I have other Sony products in my home for personel use and business use and am very happy with the products. This camera suits me fine at this point in time.I also purchased the wide angle lens and the telephoto lens as an additon. I feel it is an excellent camera for the value. This is my 2nd Digital Camera and I am very happy with my choice.

I had many digital cameras since 2000.Those prices range from 200-800 US.Their resolution range from 1.5-1o.5 megapixels.By far this S85 is the most convenient and reliable for daily and travel photography.I carry it in all my trips.Other people cary better and more expensive ones with luxury equipments but never have more interesting and reliable pictures like mine.Anywhere, any occasions with this camera ,I bring back and share with my friendsd high quality and memorable pictures.I bought this 3rd S85 and still doesn't leave it yet.Thouygh I have R1,H20 but S85 is the most reliable and convenient that I use.Highly recommend this old and good camera

  Best Lens Ever
Review created: 09/19/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have had almost every model of this line. By far the best low light digital. Takes awesome pictures, especially close-ups. I have a much newer $400 camera that doesn't do as well because the lens is so small. If you do ebay or want a super simple camera that's better than anything out now this is it. Any of them, from the dsc-s70 to the s85 are worth buying.

Started out with a 2GB, changed toa 2GB, then ordered a 512MB from e-bay. None worked. Iam not unhappy with the merchandise, just wisj I could find memory sticks with a little more than 32MB.

I bought this camera used sony last week and a cheap price, is very pleased with the retention and the features. Is only 4.3 M-pixel, but is enough to make good pictures, the batteries no longer hold much power, but buy another, prices are too cheap, I buy a flash for it, I'm very happy with this old camera from Sony -- thanks

Sony Cyber S85 - Camera for Value, Quality, Starters
Review created: 01/21/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this camera when it first came out, five years ago, & I never, ever had a problem with it (with CONSTANT use). It still works like a champ and I bought another for a backup for work. I plan on upgrading to a more sophisticated model for personal use (purely becaue photography has developed into a hobby), THIS camera is the reason digital photography became a hobby. It is easy to operate & completely user friendly. Any digital camera has a learning curve, but this one will become old hat in short order. It takes excellent close-ups, so it is a very good choice for anyone marketing a product. You can pick these up, unbelievabley cheap, on eBay because they have aged out of the Sony line up, NOT because they are a poor product. The camera is sturdy. It is a wonderful size, not itty bitty, but big enough to grip and handle without being cumbersome. If you are looking a reliable camera that takes great pictures, at a rock bottom price, this is it.

Great for beginners, perfect for general use, you won't be disappointed.

This is an absolutely awesome camera. It's user friendly, has enough megapixels to produce outstanding 8x10s, the battery is rechargable, holds like 180 minutes, and it's easy to transmit photos from camera to computer. I have recommended this camera to just about everybody I know. You don't have to be particularly tecnologically saavy to use this camera. Dropped mine like 30 times on cementand it works like a champ! S-85 rocks.
