Basic camera - very sturdy - takes terrific pics

OK - this camera is a couple years old now, which seems ancient by digital camera standards, but it's still going strong and takes excellent pictures, despite being dropped plenty.

I'm a shutterfly dad and take tons of family photos and this thing is just a great warrior. Shutter delay is respectable for a camera of this class, pictures are great, battery life is good, and the design is terrific. It's also fun to be able to display images on the TV with the video out cable

What you need to get the most out of this camera:
buy an extra battery and a couple 128 mbyte memory sticks - they're both cheap on eBay. Don't bother with the Sony proprietary stuff - Lexar is fine for memory sticks and an aftermarket battery is fine, too.

What's not so great: not much for this price range, but the shutter delay and start-up time can sometimes be a little slow when you're trying to get a pic of your toddler.

Comparing to other models: I had the Canon s-50 and lost it. I preferred the Canon in that it did 4 mp images and the zoom was a bit better, but this is a good bet and should be available on eBay for a deal.

I was looking for an easy digital camera for myself...a technically challenged individual. A camera buff friend recommended this camera. It is very easy to use and the quality of the photos is awesome. Photos/other upload to my computer with a few clicks of the mouse. The camera has many features I haven't even tried yet, but look forward to using them. It is a great camera; especially for novices or un-geeks.

  Fantastic Little Hardworking Camera
Review created: 10/17/06

My boyfriend picked up the Cybershot about four years ago, and it's survived quite a bit, including being accidently doused with a gallon of blue koolaid en route to a sporting event.

I use it every single day for eBay pictures, and we have taken over 8,000 photos with it, what with vacations, family birthdays, and cool looking sunsets we've seen the past few years. It's a fantastic machine, and I've never had any issue with photo-taking in the entire time we've owned it. It's very user friendly (which helps, because I can be pretty dumb with electronics, let me tell you...) and easy to check out the picture you just took.

Rather than swapping out the memory card again and again, my boyfriend hooked up a usb cord to my laptop that I just plug into my camera to transfer the photos - it works fantastic!

Overall, this is a camera that takes great pictures and can take some mild abuse if you're a bit clumsy. It's not the tiniest around, but it's not oh-my-god-my-arm-is-disjointing heavy, either. It's a 'passably cool' small model that blends in seamlessly with the elitist 8+ megapixel crowd :-D

One of the best point & shoot digital cameras at a affordable price on EbaY.

Likes: Takes great pictures, short video clips with sound, easy menus to navigate, super easy camera to handle.

Dislikes: None

Optional: Buy a 2.0 USB memory stick card reader for your memory card to do faster photo transfers!, buy an extra set of SONY rechargable batteries when on the go or on vaction.

  Reliable basic camera
Review created: 07/03/06

I bought a DSC-P52 after my wife left our DSC-P92 on an airplane. I felt compelled to buy another Sony because of the investment in proprietary memory sticks I've made. For the record this is the fourth SONY camera I've bought and I am quite loyal to the brand. The other cameras all work great; I just keep buying nicer versions with more options.

In general, I'm happy with my choice. THe P52 is reliable and predictable. The P92 model got 4 megapixels per image while the P52 only gets 3.2. I actually consider this an advantage because fewer megapixels allows for more photos or longer movies. The difference in quality is almost negligible.

Compared to sleeker and newer models, the P52 is a bit clunky and awkward. The lens doesn't retract into the camera body like my old P92, so it was hard to find a good camera bag for it. On the flip side, I would caution the buyer against a product with many moving parts, bells and whistles. The more of that stuff you have, the greater potential for something not working correctly--even if it's a SONY. I believe that the rechargeable batteries last longer on a fixed lens camera than one that relies on a little motor to pop the lens in and out. If you are vacationing and aren't in the habit of carrying extra batteries with you, a camera with all the "golly-gee" moving parts might become an aggravation when it suddenly runs out of power.

Sony has made sure that all of their cameras have a nice array of features including: sepia tone/negative/greyscale photo options; a simple, easy to use video option that runs as long as your memory will hold out; easy deletion of unwanted images; AA battery powering; variable flash; autofocus; and fairly solid construction.

The P52 serves well as a general purpose camera, and if you are shopping for your first digital camera, this model deserves serious consideration. You will master all the features in less than 10 minutes and have a lot of fun with it.

The major drawback I see to this camera is its average telephoto magnification (3X). It's fine for parties and vacations, but might not render the desired results if you're in the back row at a wedding. If you fancy portraits or wildlife photos, DEFINITEY consider spending a little more for a DSC-H2 or better. I have one of those and it's awesome!

Also, I think the SONY brand is well priced and there is a good pricepoint for almost any shopper. Because the DSC-P52 is an older model, there are some good deals on the few that are out there. If you can get one for under $100, you won't be disappointed.

Overall this a great camera and easy to use for all.
The only problem is that the zoom is only a 2x so getting close to a distance shot is not really going to happen but, if you are looking for a camera for a snap shot around the house, or at a party, portraits or just looking for you or someone you know that needs a their first digital camera this may be the one for you

That quality is spectacular and for the price i got it for, this is a great deal. I loved that fact that i got a camera bag, rechargable batteries, a charger, data cable and other accessoried with it. I wish i could buy another one for a friend @ this same price. I am most satisfied with this product.

I bought this as a present for one of my technologically impaired friends. Quite simply it is point and shoot.
Extremely simple to operate and simple to transfer the pictures to the computer.
Only has a 2X zoom, however.

too small of a screen but easy to use. the camera is lightweight and easy to use. it used a standard sony merorystick which you can find almost anywhere!. the camera's auto focus and 1 touch feature make the use of the camera very easy. it uses a standard usb cord which is as simple as plugging it into your usb port and the camera does the rest. my 11 year old daughter loves it!

This is really a great little camera for anybody who just wants to take great pictures without worry that it's not set up right. It's easy to learn and easy to upload photos to your computer. I wouldn't recommend it for far away shots but for close ups it can't be beat.

I have used a lot of cameras and I like the p52 because its so easy to use and has features you find on more expensive models, like taking a picture quickly instead of having to hold cheaper cameras still for several seconds waiting for the picture to capture, you can zoom in and pan around on the pictures stored on the memory stick, if your traveling and your rechargeable batteries are low say like at Disney Land, You can put in 2 double A batteries and your on the go again. You can swap out the memory stick to take even more pictures.
The Pictures are high quality. It has a movie mode, but this eats up memory space fast just like all other cameras do, so I use it mainly for pictures. I would recommend this camera for its picture quality and ease of use.

This camera is just awesome. I have a newer model of the same brand, and this camera seems to take better pictures. I love this camera. It came with an extra memory stick, a carring case, and rechargable batteries. It was worth so much more than what I paid for it. I really cant think of anything that I dont like about it. I mean the shipping was fast, the camera was in good working order when I reiplus with all the extras that came with it, there is nothing I dont like about it. Thanks for a great transaction, a great camera and for all the extra things it came with.

  Large but fast
Review created: 02/26/09

I bought this to use in a trail/game camera because it was inexpensive and fast. The flash intensity so far seems to be excellent. Speed between shots without the flash is about a second or less. With the flash it is still pretty fast. Memory for it can be a bit pricey per megabyte compared to other types though.

  Great lil Cam !
Review created: 11/07/08

I have been using this camera for about 6 years and I love it. Sure the technology is a little dated now, but it still works great.

In my experience there appears to be only two problems with these cams. Either have a lens error or the display gets buggered up. I recommend getting a screen protector and not dropping it to save the display.

The lens error just seems to happen. If you find a a P 52 in working order for $50 or less pick up a spare. When one breaks just sell it for parts. You can get $10 - 15 for a busted one, simple.

Keep a good set or two of rechargable Nimh AA batteries around and go have fun with this simple cam.

The reason why I bought this camera is because the one I was using before did not work properly when it came to using the flash. I would take a picture with the flash on and it would come up blurry, so to avoid this I would have to take the picture without the flash, input the memory card into my computer and adjust the brightness just so that the picture will come out right. But even doing this it did not look perfect.

I honestly love this camera the pictures come out really good when using the flash or not. It adjust automatically. The video comes out really nice and the audio is just as great. I also did some research on this camera you can by product that can easily be attached to help you make your picture come out even better.

There are a few scratches on this camera, but it does not matter to me, just as long as the pictures come out perfect. Also the memory card does not hold a lot of pictures, but I can always by another one.
