707 reasons to buy this camera.....
Review created: 12/09/05
30 of 36 people found this review helpful.

Alright, you got me, I really can't come up with 707 reasons. I can however try to describe why I purchased this camera over the competition. When I purchased this camera I had alot to choose from. Not only were there comparable digital camera's to choose from, but there were some good SLR's to choose from too. When I was standing in our hometown Best Buy staring at the choices, I have to say I was already bias. I have made it a habit to purchase on name brand alone, and Sony had been the most reliable. With that being said, I was open to other options. There were four things that I was looking for.
1) Megapixels
I had a cell phone camera that took photo's at 1.0 megapixels and they were terrible. The picture was grainy and unclear. With the 5.0 megapixels, the difference was crystal clear. The pictures are sharp, and colorful with an almost life-like view of your shot on the LCD screen.
2) Optical Zoom
Alot of camera's promote digital zoom as an important quality in a camera when infact, the higher the optical zoom, the clearer the picture will be when you zoom in on your target.
3) Memory Stick capability
Quite simply the better alternative to Cd's, tapes, or film. The advancement in printer capabilities and now the option to put it directly into your TV was exciting for me.
4) Large LCD Screen
This camera has a large, easy to see screen at any angle that you take your photo. With the ability to swivel the lens up and down to adjust to any shot while still viewing the screen is a luxury in digital camera's. It has the viewfinder to look through but I never use it.

Those are the important things that I needed in a camera. I did not care about the size, weight, or shape. The camera is a little heavy, and bulky would probably be a good descriptive word for it, but the pro's far outway the con's. Another great feature is the ability to screw on filters for any shot. I am glad that I chose this camera and would recommend this camera to anyone from the serious photographer to the novice who expects perfection.

hands down, this is the best camera for your buck!

I can’t emphasize enough, the benefits you will achieve using this camera. The bold design gives you a genuine feeling of being a step above the other guy, and the performance etches it in stone. Side by side comparison with Canon and Nikon will prove that Sony’s precision electronic capabilities combined with Carl Ziess optics put this 5.1 mp in a class of its own. I carry this camera daily, and it takes its fair share of bumps and abuses and I’ve never had a single failure. The only drawback however is the lack of a live hot shoe. There is a standard slide mount that resembles the hot shoe, but it only accommodates a few Sony branded add-ons that are reliant upon the ACC port.(why even bother?). The f717 and f727 do have functional hot shoe however. A twistable body allows for overhead, over the crowd shots or super low ground shooting. And a cupped TTL LCD make daylight and private focus just a thumb switch away. The lens will accommodate any 58mm filter or conversion lens, and the AE laser spotting insures focal point accuracy in any light conditions. Auto bracketing, burst of 3 and 3 pre-set scene settings make for quick decision confidence. This camera will definitely put you a couple notches higher on a pro scale. Highly recommend! Amateurs will get professional results, professionals will get remarkable results.

Compair this to a used Sony 717 or 828

My ego got me started looking for a new SLR and after looking I started to think about what I was getting other than a new toy. So I compared it with my Sony f707 which I got this new when they first came out the cost about a grand 5 years ago. it's was a great camera then and is still today. If your looking for a good used camera look at this one first. There is very little difference between this and the f717 or the f828. Which has more up grades. Really we are looking a the same basic camera at a much lower price. For the average or above average camera buff this should something to look at. Let me point out several things about this camera.
1. It still works trouble free and gets used a lot every day.
2. Carl Ziess optics
3. The lens will accommodate any 58mm filter or conversion lens
4. Optical Zoom
5. Megapixels: I would love to see you print off a 10mp image on your printer.

Now you really can not say that about the new SLR cameras but with bodies costing $1,500.00 dollars less lens I thought I would wait till the curb came down on state of the art cameras. I would say that for the 2 or 3 hundred dollars you would spent on this type of camera would be a wise investment

BEST piece of equipment SONY ever made ~ BAR NONE!!
Review created: 10/31/08

Although it is an older camera, the features available on this camera are still light years ahead of what is available on current models. Shooting low or high such as over other peoples heads at events or low on a tripod for posed shots, not a problem with this one, just tilt the body and see perfectly what the camera is going to shoot. Large footprint, yes, but very comfortable in the hands and a great piece to work with. Your hands quickly learn the functions and where to be at the proper instant when that once in a lifetime shot presents itself. I have 2 of these camera in use now, and definitely plan on adding another to my "arsenal" of cameras before the opportunity is no longer available. There is a place for the small cameras that are predominate today in the marketplace, the ones with that "cheap" plastic feel, like if you were to accidently misuse it there would be ruined, but I haven't found that place in my photographic needs yet.
I could go on and on about this camera, but I am sure it would only be like shooting myself in my foot, because the more people out there that find this camera indispensable as I have, will only add to the increase in popularity and of course cost to me...... I think I have said enough.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC_F707 shots fab infared photos

Having a great time shooting infared pictures with my new (old) Sony. Just need to add a couple of filters and you are ready to go. Much cheaper way to go than buying an infared camera and a great way to discover if this type of photography is for you. As most shots are for landscape, this camera is ideal. You can pretty much see how the finished photo will look and delete on the spot. Also much cheaper to develop. What I do not like is that the largest stick I have been able to find is for 64. Costal92 was able to supply them. It does force you to download onto a disc, but maybe that's not so bad.

Mine has fallen apart after 5 plus years of HARD use.
But I am so impressed I am buying a second hand one on
ebay. This one does it all. The only thing I wish I had
and now I see I CAN get seperately was telephoto lense.
I use for my Ebay auction business and beyond and LOVE IT!

  Legacy Camera; Legendary Performance

This camera's lens makes all the difference when it comes to taking quality pictures. It also takes razor sharp closeups!
The DSC-F707 is comparable to the successor model DSC-F717. The main difference is you can only use the standard non Pro Memory Sticks.
So expect to find a bargain on this beauty!

The Sony F707 was really one of the best cameras of it's time - way back in 2001 when I bought mine.
But this is the kicker - I use mine for both hobby and business (I publish a very popular web site) - and even today, 2008, I am having a difficult time figuring out what to buy to replace it. I can afford most any camera - but it is still a tough decision.

If you can get a good used one cheap - and you are mostly a point and shoot photographer that wants GREAT photos the first time......do it. Otherwise, save your pennies and spend 5 to 10x as much.
Some of the photos at these two places were taken with my Sony...they are all scaled down for web.

  Great Camera
Review created: 09/08/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Great camera. I had researched the camera I needed for my work and as it was no longer manufactured Ebay was the place to find it. There were a number of listings. I choose with care.
Knowing the current value helped me decide on just how much I was inclined to spend. Picture and text about the camera was important too. I steer clear of the over produced items.. and always avoid a poorly pictured one too.
This camera was ideal in presentation and sure enough its a great camera! Well done Ebay seller and well done Ebay.

One of the best cameras ever
Review created: 09/10/07
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you must know, I originally received this model camera when it was first made in late 2001. I used it until June 2007 when it was stolen in Japan. Though many camera developments have occurred since the 707 first came out, I didn't see anything so impressive from other models to make me move to a newer model as a replacement. Therefore, I purchased a replacement 707, as it has always served me well in getting great photos, easily. It's fast, auto-focus works well, rarely gives me a blurry shot regardless of shaky hands, great lens. I wish it were smaller but it is easy to carry in one hand like a gun, turns on quickly and ready to snap whenever I see a surprising moment come up. It has a lot of functions and settings, many I don't need but nice to know it has a range of things if I need. People have always said over the years "hey great camera" or "wow what a great shot", so I figured I couldn't do much better.

Excellent camera, no matter what your experience level
Review created: 01/09/07

3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As a photographer, I rate myself as "fair" but can still take excellent pictures with this camera. Relatively easy to use, not too heavy or too light; makes you feel like you really know what you're doing. You can find all the technical jargon and specs online, but that only helps out the really experienced photographer. My brother is an amateur astronomer and uses cameras that cost over twice this much, and, if he recommended that I get one, that's all I needed to know. Only drawback - the Memory Stick Duo Adapter for higher capacity memory sticks don't work in this camera, but does in the later DSC-F717 model. This is the best camera I've ever owned - highly recommend it.

  Not enough Memory
Review created: 11/04/06

I love the camera, the only thing I do not like is the memory stick 128MB. It only takes the old Sony Memory Stick 128MB or less. That sucks since it takes nice big 5.0 Mega Pixel pics. Other than that the camera is great. Sony came out with a nice one and at the price I got it for on Ebay it cannot be beat.

I am very pleased with the overall function and ease of this camera. It takes very good pictures for a 5 pix camera this must be do to the Carl Zesis Lens. It also has a night vision mode which I've used that is great. I would recommend this camera to others.
