I love this game. This game is one of, if not, the best Sonic game. It's awesome.

If you don't have a Sega CD, you can still play this game on the Nintendo Gamecube on the "Sonic Gems Collection". (Also avaiable on PS2, but only in Japan)

  sonic cd for sega cd

anyone who knows anything about the sega genesis, knows what an awesome franchise sonic was. sonic cd is no exception and is the only sonic the hedgehog title for the sega cd. playing the game you will enjoy full cd quality music, the music in sonic games has always been a strong point and the music in sonic cd is just what you'd expect. the ability to continue a previously unfinished game comes in handy when you dont have time to finish the entire game in one sitting. also sonic cd introduced a new concept in the sonic universe, time travel. with past, present, and future variants of each of the levels there's tons to explore with unique music for each time period. the boss battles are fairly easy compared to other sonic games. there's also an original animation in the opening of the game which is really cool! all in all sonic cd is one of the funnest games you'll ever play on the sega cd and no game collection would be complete without it.

I'm not really sure why everyone on here seems to be so harsh on this game, but any true fan of the Sonic games will fall to their knees at the greatness of Sonic CD. In my opinion, it's the best Sonic game ever made and is my favorite. Most people who have enjoyed a Sonic game have never tried this one out because most people never owned the Sega CD (also very underrated), and if you are one of them, pick this up, you are in for a huge treat. This game is massive and beautiful. Every level features an AMAZING full cd quality soundtrack performed by Spencer Nilsen, it sounds like no other Sonic game. It should also be noted that the Japanese version has a totally different (in my opinion, a little better) soundtrack, but both versions have equally amazing quality and most sonic fans still argue about which version is better. The concept of time travel in a Sonic game fits very well, I'm surprised it wasn't used in a newer title. Also, the special stages RULE, they are BY FAR the most enjoyable special stages in ANY sonic game. The replay value is very high here as you try to find all the robot machines in the past stages to make good futures and get the best ending. I'm a hardcore gamer with a somewhat impressive collection, I've played every game system and own most of them, no game has topped this one from being my favorite of all time. If you own a Sega CD, buy this, if you don't, either buy one to play this great game, or buy it on Sonic Gems collection for gamecube. Don't miss out on this amazing game!

  Nice game, fun clasic

This is a fun game it is similar to sonic 2 but without tails. It is better than the first one in that you get the spin dash and the CD sounds are good.

The gameplay is facepaced like to be expected from a sonic the hedgehog game. The time warp feature is a good adition, seeing the same level in the past and in the future adds to the content.

Not the best sonic game, but a nice adition for any collection.

  Sonic in its classic glory
Review created: 07/20/09

This is, in my opinion, the last of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. All the versions beyond Sonic CD are, well, pathetic excuses of :expletive deleted:. This game did almost everything right. It kept the original feel of Sonic intact and added better quality graphics and a creative time travel system. Along with all of the updates, Sonic CD has a save feature which is both very nice to have and rather rare for the Sega CD to have. The only problems I have with this game, however are kind of frivolous. This game just seems like it is a little too fast. I mean I get motion sickness from trying to figure out what is going on sometimes. Another issue is that it is on the Sega CD. Now many people already know that the Sega CD sucks. Why does such a good game have to be on such a crappy system? but that is another matter entirely.

One of the best Sonic titles

Lots to like here: Graphics are well done with good use of color and shows off some of the Sega CD's scaling/rotation capabilities. Sound and music are top notch. Levels are challenging without ever being too hard. One downside I saw was in the gameplay, its REALLY fast, too fast at times which can be frustrating. Also, the controls in the bonus stages are a little off and its hard to judge the targets you're trying to hit. None of this really affects my overall opinion though. The added bonus of time warping is interesting and changes the game, giving it some more replay value to go back and experience each stage in the past and future ( the look and music change when you warp, and if you find Robotniks machines it will change the present when you warp back ). I know some didn't like the whole time travel thing, but to be honest, it's not a big deal one way or the other. The game would have been great without it and is great with it.

I bought Sonic CD back in 1994 and played it a bit. The game largest of the 2d Sonic games but was missing an important piece, multi player play. This title easily has the best soundtrack of all the Sonic games prior to hitting the Dreamcast in 1999. I would not recommend buying the Sega CD version of this title as it can be found in compilation disks on other systems or for the PC. Strictly for collectors or Sonic fanatics.

  The best Sonic 2D platformer
Review created: 02/01/08(updated 07/14/08)

Of all the Sonic games, and there are a lot, the best 2D platformer would be this one, Sonic CD.

Gameplay is much like what you'd expect from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. It has fast paced on rails linear platforming action.

The graphics and sound are great in Sonic CD. There's nothing wrong with the levels - Eggman keeps coming up with interesting and colorful challenges for our blue hero. As usual, Sonic Team keeps the Sonic series fresh with new ways to get from point "A" to point "B".

Sonic fans really need to treat themselves to this game. This was released near the end of the 16-bit cycle so it really shows how good 16-bit games could be. It shows the best that Sega could do with their little blue hedgehog in a 16-bit world using technology that was, by now, 6 years old.

If you have the Sega CD expansion module, then this game BELONGS in your collection.

  It is fun
Review created: 10/07/07

Great, but not when matched with sonic 2 or 3. Level design isnt that great and they are really really short, but its still fun. Doesnt feel as fluid as the others either. Like spinball is slow. Save feature is nice tho.

Sonic CD is not my favorite Sonic game
Review created: 09/25/07

Pros:
You know him, you love him, Sonic arrives on the Sega CD. The controls in Sonic CD are as tight as in any other 2-D Sonic games. The game developers took a bold step off the beaten Sonic formula with the 'time travel gimmick'. First Sonic must touch a sign with 'past' or 'future' written on it, next he has to run very fast and presto he warps to a different time. When Sonic arrives in another time the level's layout and background will be different. This somewhat adds to the level variety in Sonic CD.

Cons:
Sonic CD's graphics look exactly like that on the Genesis! In fact Sonic's model has been ripped directly from Sonic 1 for the genesis. The design of most levels is sloppy, Sonic's speed becomes hindered by this. Levels look and feel jumbled, lacking theme. The music in the title is also lacking in quality as a whole, although there are some catchy songs. When you add everything up, Sonic CD is not on par with great 2-D Sonic titles like Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles for the genesis.

Sonic CD, not one of my favorites.

Sonic CD is one of those games you just have to try, because it's "Sonic" right? Well, it's him, but he's in a twisted, pitiful mess of a game. Don't get me wrong, I love the Sonic series on the Genesis, I still play them to this day, they never get old, but this game is awful. I do, however, like a couple of songs on the soundtrack, mainly "Sonic Boom" and the "Palmtree Panic" themes. However, this cannot make up for the rest of the game's so-called "qualities."

The main reason I dislike the game is the level design. A Jumbled, twisted mess of objects on the screen unfortunately greets Sonic as he tries to complete a level. All of these objects just slow the pace down (Sonic was made to go fast!!). I also believe the "time-travel" feature to be the most ridiculously annoying feature in the game. I commend the game developers for trying to do something different, but this just doesn't work. Once again, this slows the pace of the game down! I would rather the developers take the "Sonic 2" approach and create a larger variety of levels in different worlds. I got so bored in most of the Sonic CD levels, I had to take a break, and summon the courage to play it the next day. (I really wanted to give this game a fair shake).

Overall, stay away from this game at all costs, I love Sonic, just not this depressing let-down of a game.

Spinning onto CD for the first time
Review created: 07/23/06
by: flash-hammer -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Graphics, Sound, GameplayB

Cons:
Bonus levels a bit off, some second hand prices

Often cited as the Holy Grail of Sonic the Hedgehog games, Sonic CD was the Sega mascot s sole appearance on the ill-fated Mega-CD add on to Sega s 16-Bit console, and in the eyes of many, his finest hour on any platform. Indeed, while Sonic 2 was the one more people played, Sonic CD is regarded as the connoisseurs choice of Sonic game, and therefore naturally it commanded something that could actually be regarded as quite a bit of money(a rarity for a Mega-CD game) on Ebay.com and the like until recently when it was ported to the PS2 as part of the Sonic Gems Collection. Indeed, despite my...

My favorite Sonic title out there
Review created: 12/16/02
by: HawgWyld -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Fastest, longest and best-looking of 16-bit Sonic titles

Cons:
Horrible theme song; overlooked title; awful 3D on bonus levels

It's a true shame there weren't more titles for the ill-fated Sega CD. Indeed, had there been more titles like Sonic CD, the CD-ROM upgrade for the Genesis might have prolonged the life of the system. Having said that, I'll submit to you that Sonic CD is reason enough to pull that old Genesis out of the closet, grab a cheap Sega CD unit for it and find a copy of this game. Really, it's that good. Most fans of the platform gaming genre recognize how great the cartridge-based Sonic series for the Genesis was. Sonic was built as an extremely-fast hedgehog who sped his way through various levels..

What made Sega CD last as long as it did
Review created: 11/23/04
by: mihoshi -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent game all the way around!

Cons:
one of the only excellent Sega CD releases.

This is a fantastic Sonic game. There is nothing to dislike about it! Long play time, desire to play it again and again, simple, and non violent! Beautiful job Sega! If it wasn't for Sonic CD the Sega CD would have had an even shorter life span than it did. If you have the Sega CD, get this game and try it out - I don't think highly of many of the SCD's games. Try out Sonic CD, Jurassic Park, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Heart of the Alien, and Rise of the Dragon for the Sega CD - they are all long, fun games that you will enjoy! If you don't have a Sega CD already, these games may not be enough..
