Elton John`s Songs From The West Coast CD
Review created: 08/24/08

When this CD came out I passed over it. Unlike all of his early albums that you just couldn`t wait to buy at your local record store and play on your turntable. I bought this CD after viewing a special on VH1 Classic about Elton John. The recording is excellent and plays great at home. It starts off good and hits a few bumps in the road before some nice mellow tunes get it back on track. It ends with my favorite "This Train Don`t Stop There Anymore". It`s a much more mature Elton and his songs reflect that. Overall, it`s a good CD that your kids probably won`t like. One more reason to buy it.

The album is loaded with intriguing lyrics and with a bit of a different vocal approach by Reg. He is at times nostalgic for the good old days of the Elton John Band of the '70's without getting stuck in a lamentable time warp. Elton has a little something for everyone on this album but it is not the expected mega-hit the press was hoping for.

The song with the most radio airplay is the haunting "I Want Love", which is my personal favorite on the CD! Elton's vocals are much deeper and raspier than on past efforts and for this song, it works! "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore" was the 2nd single to receive extended FM and AM radio attention, and it deserved it! It is a beautiful ballad and again, reminds us that Elton's vocal prowess and range is ever-changing and at times quite suprising.

The CD has some duds but if you enjoy Elton John, even these will catch your attention and make you tap your foot. Overall, this was not what the world was expecting when it was released in 2001 as the "Elton John comeback recording". However, the CD is, as always, well-produced and worth having in your music library. If you are an Elton John fan, this would be in the middle of Elton's 40-odd recordings and a definite must-have!
