  Not "Wicked" HARDCOVER

No.....this is nothing like the fabulous book "Wicked," but it is still a good read if you keep an open mind. Liir definitely does his share of whining and seems lost within himself for the most part, depressed and sullen, but the themes that follow our current politics and the revelations he makes at the end are very much like what is happening now. I know a lot of people did not like the book, but I believe Maguire plans on a third book and it may open us up once again to the how's and why's of this whole story. Yes.....was difficult to follow at times but I stuck with it.

I love the book wicked which is all about the life and ties of the wicked witch of the west. This is a very fun sequal to that book feturing Elphaba's son liir and his life. ou get to see him grow from a wet blaket into a man that elphaba would be prod to admit was her son. follow liir on his jurneys ashe leaves Kiamo Ko with his mothers assassins Dorthy, The lion, The scarcrow, and the tin woodsman. Join him in the gaurd as he marches on quadling country. Cry for him when he is nearly murdeed by the emporers evil winged dragons, and grip th edge of your seet as candle plays her domingon to save his life! -- Read this book, But rad wicked first!!!

  a Wickedly good sequal

This book is a great follow-up for anyone who enjoyed "Wicked". it follows the path of Liir the young boy who just "may be Elphaba's son", and his coming of age as well as many other themes interwoven to create a solid plot. His journey will hit home as he deals with wanting to do right, what haunts him, and what path to follow next. Should do his duty or follow that restless voice inside that can't settle down and wants to do something more? The language is modern but keeps an Oz type charm throughout. I found this book to have many more humorous moments then Wicked. Great for a book club as each chapter can provide much to talk about. A good read regardless if it is "just a light read" or you prefer to ponder the deeper meaning page by page. Maguire leaves a possibility of a third book though it still concludes nicely.

Good start but very disappointed as plot developed

Enjoyed Wicked for the most part so decided to get the second book in the series. Started good but was very disappointed that there was a homosexual element added to the plot. The story did not need it nor did it enhance the character in any way. I was so disappointed that I immediately got rid of the book and refuse to read the third book in the series because of it. For this reason I would never recommend this book to anyone.

  A true pageturner!

I could not put this book down from the moment I received it. Mr. Maguire again wrote a wonderful novel that is funny, thrilling, sad, and yet oh-so-familiar with the Oz background.

The book starts out where Wicked left off. Elphaba (the Witch) is dead, but her son lives on. He begins a journey that ends up being his young adulthood. The characters are wonderfully written, you feel like you know these people. The son, Liir, isn't perfect and that's the odd thing. You still root for him over and over even as he makes these heinous mistakes. Many of the same people from Wicked are back also. Nutty Nanny, Shell (the brother of the Wicked Witches), crazy old Yackle, Chistery the Flying Monkey, etc.

I have been asked what age group should read this novel and I hate to say it but over 18 is what I recommend unless you don't care what your children read. The book talks about sex frequently, and homosexuality plays a part. Sorry if that's a spoiler but I would rather that people know.

But all in all, this is a wonderfully talented writer taking the fictional world as we know it, turning it upside down and shaking it over and over. It is an amazing book, I read it in four days even working part-time. THAT IS HOW GOOD THIS IS!! If you like this type of book you won't be able to put it down.

I can't wait to read the other books of his that I have coming! :D

The only downside to the entire book...Mr. Maguire leaves us hanging at the end...foretelling another sequel, which is obviously not out yet. Sigh! Anyway, enjoy this wonderful book! I sure did!

  More Brilliance from Gregory Maguire
Review created: 10/04/08

Another brilliant work of fiction by Gregory Maguire. If you've read Wicked, you should absolutely read this.

This one didn't seem quite as intensely derranged as Wicked, but I think that is only because I had already been exposed to Mr.Maguires twisted mind and knew what to expect this time around. Eitherway, this book delivers. It is twisted, sickening, creepy, and just plain magnificent.

I don't recommened this book to everyone. There are some people out there who don't have the stomach for gregory maguires strange and disturbing, yet genius, way of writing. But if you liked Wicked, you will like this. No doubt about it.

Son of a Witch - What happens after Elphaba dies....
Review created: 09/02/08

This book is only slightly less captivating than Wicked. However, it is a still a quick and enjoyable read. Liir struggles through learning who he is, and in the process, grows up. The ending is perfect. I would say that Wicked must be read before you read Son of a Witch - and if you read Wicked, read Son of Witch soon after, so as to remember certain characters.

maguire: son of a witch book

Maguire's style is stunning. When I had finished his first book 'Wicked' I decided that I must purchase the "continue" of the story. Now I'm in the reading process, but I'm totally satisfied and not disappointed! The great narration is the same as it was in Wicked and the story is exciting and worth reading too! In addiction it was more cheaper through ebay than in official book-stores!

This book was not the sequel that it could have been!
Review created: 02/06/08

I bought this book anticipating the same page-turning anticipation as I found in Wicked. However, I believe too many years spanned Maguire's writing of the two books - time has a way of changing one's original thought process and the transition from Wicked to Witch was not smooth. Witch's conclusion left this reader with a disappointment that resulted from the characters' loose ends. Perhaps, Maguire will write another book that will "glue together" all the fractures?!
