Album Notes SOMETHING TO REMEMBER is a collection of Madonna's ballads. It includes two new songs, "You'll See" and "One More Chance," and two versions of "I Want You," originally recorded for the Marvin Gaye tribute album INNER CITY BLUES, which was released three weeks earlier. Personnel includes: Madonna (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Michael Thompson (electric guitar); Suzie Katayama (cello); David Foster, Jan Mullaney (keyboards); Simon Franglen (programming); Massive Attack. Producers include: Nellee Hooper, Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Babyface, David Foster. Engineers include: David Reitzas. Recorded at Chartmaker Studios; Brooklyn Studios. Includes liner notes by Madonna. She can dance and she can jive, and most of the time that's why you buy Madonna records. She's our real-life dancing queen. So if buying an album advertised as her "Greatest Ballad Hits" strikes you as sort of like buying acoustic Abba, you're probably not alone. But ever since TRUE BLUE, Madonna has displayed a keen interest in pop orchestration and smoky, soulful singing. On the breakthrough "Live To Tell," she discovered the low end of her vocal range, while co-producer and co-writer Patrick Leonard built a psychedelic swell of keyboards, guitars and sound effects around her. It was like nothing she had done before, dealing directly with dark secrets, foreshadowing an adult pop sound that she'd stick by through all the twists, turns and trends that followed. SOMETHING TO REMEMBER collects such slow and mid-tempo tracks from the various nooks in which Madonna's hidden them (though most were singles, many had showed up in album form only on soundtracks), and shows off the dark chanteuse qualities that she has only intermittently gotten credit for. Notice the almost Beatlesque harmonies and swooping strings of her 1994 hit "Take A Bow," the dream-like feel of the electric piano on the wistful "This Used To Be My Playground," or the epic feel of "Oh Father," which starts with a dance of classical strings before dipping to a soul-baring vocal about the causes and effects of child abuse. The three new songs on SOMETHING TO REMEMBER are formidable additions to this oeuvre. "You'll See," with its Spanish guitar flourishes and lyric about surviving a wrecked affair, is a direct sequel to "Take A Bow." "I Want You," a Marvin Gaye cover that also appears on the Gaye tribute album INNER CITY BLUES, is a stunning collaboration with UK's Massive Attack, taking Madonna into a trippy, spare realm that sounds like dub with strings. And "One More Chance" is, amazingly, almost acoustic Madonna--the dancing queen cast improbably as the strumming princess. Review created: 07/28/01 by: kuuleimomi -- a member of Epinions Pros: Most of the ballads, Massive Attack on I Want You, music wise a nice album Cons: Madonna's vocal, that is. Madonna was there all my life. Right when Everybody became a club hit in 1982 in the USA I was born in Russia. If you think I could escape Madonna in my Classic Rock Bohemian home then you re wrong. I never knew life without Madonna. For the United States she s an icon, goddess, something so far out of reach. I minded my own business singing tunes from Evita [my personal favorite album of hers] till I met two huge fans of hers. Surprisingly, they were not Americans and of course, just as any fans they had all of the discs. Probably that s when my serious journey into her music had begun. I grew to love Ray of Light, even Music, but still, I tend to think my favorite will always be Evita. Before that album Madonna was different, her voice was not strong at all. It was high with electronic sound when arranged, it was pleasant as velvet when she sang slow songs, it was like nice warm blanket covering you but it was not strong voice. Choosing of all the evils , albums before 1997, I d say Something to Remember [1995] is the best. It has a lot of her famous ballads, songs that I hear on the radio every day, songs that seem like have always been there. But more important, those are the songs I can relate to. Not all, of course, I would ve never said that a pop tune like Crazy For You can bring up anything but irritation. I m not a huge fan of pop sound of the 80s, I don t really like Madonna s annoying high vocal of Like a Virgin period. Another song I m not really into is the first track I Want You, surprisingly I like the second version of it better, with addition of orchestra it is sort of more in the spirit of the album, and of course, Massive Attack made a great sound for these tracks. Most of the songs are easily recognized hit ballads. They are done with usual Madonna s style, though the word usual is not exactly what we re looking for when talking about Madonna. If I ask you to name her five most famous songs, then at least one will be on this album [I hope so, otherwise how much do I owe you?]. When I look back at my life I will sure sing some of the tunes from this album. I ll Remember may have some clich d lyrics, but they are simple enough to fit all the wisdom of a strong bond. Thinking back I see faces of people who I can sing, And I ll remember the way that you saved me , I see those who I can tell, And I ll remember the love that you gave me now that I m standing on my own, and I remember the way that you change me Sometimes in simple words there is everything I need for some reflection in my heart. This song is definitely an important part of my life soundtrack, just as it s part of With Honors . Another tune, which would be more logical to follow I ll Remember is You ll See, a song with a different attitude. I don t need anyone at all is quite opposite to I ll Remember . In the mean time, is there anyone who doesn t know that famous opening of You ll See with all kind of percussions, acoustic guitar [together they set some kind of Spanish sound], and that pride mixed with pain in Madonna s voice. Also, it s a fairly overplayed track too. Take A Bow is the track between the two above. I loved the song when was a bit younger, but when I saw the video it became some kind of a synonym to the word style in music videos. It is followed by an empty Crazy For You and an awesome This Used To Be My Playground from the movie League of Their Own. It can actually qualify for another life soundtrack song, with the sadness of gone days and childhood memories you can easily relate to it. The following two songs, Live To Tell and Love Don t Live Here Anymore, are very interesting compositions, the only thing that is definitely distracting is Madonna s voice. I mean, don t get me wrong, it sounds so her and I know she released most of her albums singing like that. However after Evita and Ray of Light when I was still crossing my fingers every time she had to take a high note we got used to her new vocal and listening to Music over and over again I almost forgot that there was time when Madonna did not sing. I really would like to hear those strong instrumentally wise tracks with awesome lyrics by new Madonna, Madonna who finally has her strong voice. Title track Something To Remember did not impress me much and did not leave anything to remember. One More Chance strongly reminds me Color Of The Night by Lauren Christy, mostly lyrics and voice intonations wise [not vocal!] and it also has the same notes. However Lauren s performance is way better, that s why I could not stand this song more that one time. The last three songs of the album are really good. Finale starts with Rain, upbeat song, rhythm set by numerous percussions imitating rain and wow! Madonna s voice does sound good on this one: high, gentle, and smooth. On the contrary, Oh, Father is sung in a deep running-nose voice; the song is way from upbeat: it s about child abuse. Starting with a classical strings dancing element, the song features beautiful piano and chorus. And finally the first track in orchestras version, I Want You. General feeling of the album and impression: amazing beautiful ballads with an exception of couple mentioned songs. Seems like this is one of the best Madonna s albums, ironic, but I find her voice is the major con. Songs like I ll Remember , You ll See , Take A Bow , I Want You , It Used To Be My Playground , Love Don t Live Here Anymore , and Rain are not only the best on the album, but also one of the best songs in Madonna s career. Just one request/dream wish: I really want to listen to this album with Madonna s improved strong voice. And the next time you go to the laundry 1. I Want You - (with Massive Attack) 2.
