Ray Bradbury wrote, not only the book this movie is based on, but also kept creative control over the whole production. As a result, it remains true to what he wanted portrayed, in early 20th century America, a parable of the capacity of love to break the power of temptation and evil to enslave the human heart. The two adult characters are played by highly recognized & acclaimed actors, Jonathon Pryce and Jason Robards. While the boys in the movie are well played, by talented young actors, the drama turns on the tension created by the adult actors. I have a hard time seeing how they could possibly be done better. Pryce's Shakespearean talents are drawn on well, in creating an evil and hate-motivated supernatural carnival owner/manager, while Robard's portrayal of young Will's father, whose self-doubts and self-condemnation for his imagined shortcomings as a father and a man, uses this award-winning actor's abilities to portray the common man, who loves his son, but sees himself as a failure, can't be improved on. A simple tale, well told. (As is true of all movies, the detail in the book cannot be translated into visual format, well, but the creepy and tense atmosphere was kept well in the spirit,[quite literaly], of the book.) Well done, Ray Bradbury.
