Some Kind of Wonderful -- DVD Movie

Not just another "coming of age" movie, this one actually has a plot. Superb acting talents of Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson and Mary Stuart Masterson (who really steals the film). Keith (Eric) and Watts (Mary) have been friends forever. However, girls mature before boys, and Watts realizes that after all the years of friendship with Keith, she loves him. But, being slow and not quite "getting it" like boys usually do, Keith thinks he's in love with Amanda Jones (Thompson). Fantastic movie worth watching AND having in your collection.

  Some Kind of Wonderful DVD

Great movie - high school popularity, romance, learning lifelong lessons, and standing up to parents. Girl drummer who is a tomboy is friends with a boy who is infatuated with the most popular girl in the school. He picks his moment and makes a move. Don't want to spoil the ending, but it is worth watching.

  My Money Flow Like Wine
Review created: 06/22/08

Every so often comes a film so vile that its own lack of a single redeemable element becomes its saving grace. The surreal decision to cast Saved By the Bell alumna Elizabeth Berkley as the protagonist, combined with the even more absurd premise of an exotic dancer's oddly intense dream to climb the ladder from a sleazy strip joint to a topless Las Vegas extravaganza, makes this joke among movies a rather funny one, indeed. Though director Paul Verhoeven's attempt at giving a no-holds-barred look inside the intricacies of the sex industry was an indisputable failure, certain aspects of the pornography business are unwittingly portrayed so humorously that the meaning behind them becomes slightly more palatable. A feminist view of the same subject matter could easily be disregarded as a biased or politically correct look at the age-old business, but the over-the-top, laughably bad nature of Showgirls unintentionally manages to desexualize softcore pornography, and, in doing so, puts the nuances of the industry, from the undertone of hatred toward women to the status differences between sex workers, into the light. The spectacularly trashy film strove to go above and beyond what everyone wanted to hate it for, thus making itself a laughably contrived production rather than a biting exposé. Showgirls also set a bar for what not to do when attempting to highlight adult issues, which helped forge the path for more recent endeavors of a similar nature, such as the documentary Live Nude Girls Unite!, sex workers' art shows, and the resurgence of interest in all things burlesque.

Love this movie! Takes me back to the times when I was in high school. I don't think I have ever seen Mary Stuart Masterson in a bad movie. I would recommend this movie to all girls of high school age. I still like it and I am 42!

  Above-average 80s teen movie
Review created: 07/05/07
by:

Some Kind of Wonderful is another John Hughes creation. It came out in 1987. In terms of plot, it is not that different from "Pretty In Pink", except for the ending. It is another teen flick from the '80s that deals with hard-core issues that face teenagers, such as romantic love, being in the 'in' group, being right vs. being popular and being cool vs. being yourself.

The plot is basically that Keith (Eric Stoltz) has a crush on pretty and popular Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), yet his best friend, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) has a crush on him and Amanda is going out with Hardy Jenns (Craig Sheffer) who is rich, arrogant and a bully. Keith goes to extraordinary lengths to try to get Amanda to even notice him, such as deliberately getting into detention, to be with her, only she talks her way out of detention, but he makes some new friends, most notably Duncan (Elias Koteas), an extremely tough street kid.

This movie did not star any of John Hughes' regulars. Instead, it featured a new crop of actors. The main actors, Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson and Mary Stuart Masterson, did not appear in any of Hughes' other films. My favorite character was Duncan (Elias Koteas), who played the hood. He was so bad he was good and he played the role of the hoodlum with style and flash, to the point where you enjoy watching him be bad. As the movie progresses, it's clear that Duncan, despite his tough-guy persona, is really a good guy and a loyal friend. This is particularly true at the end of the movie when Hardy Jenns, sets up Stoltz at a party and then Duncan and his gang of hoodlums show up at the party in the nick of time. It all ends happily.

'Some Kind of Wonderful' is something of an also-ran. It's plot is very similar to 'Pretty In Pink' and it came about only because 'Pretty In Pink' didn't have the kind of ending John Hughes wanted. The acting is pretty good overall, but nothing spectacular, with the exception of Elias Koteas playing the hoodlum.

The best part of the movie was Duncan and the scenes that he played, particularly when he and his guys take over Hardy Jenns' party.

This DVD of Some Kind of Wonderful is a must-buy for anyone who likes the movie because it includes commentaries about the making of the movie, behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews with the actors themselves.
