Album Notes Personnel: Tamia (vocals); Pierre Favre (percussion). Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in April 1991. A little nachtmusique, please. SOLITUDES is passionately minimal, varied, achingly intimate, and quite beautiful. Tamia's passionate, wordless vocals, like mysterious, multi-kulti chants, speak of many distant peoples but are universally identifiable. Pierre Favre's gripping percussion undulates both above and below Tamia's earthy falsetto. Utilizing massed gongs, cymbals, bells, and other nameless sources, Favre sets up devastatingly intense passages that temper the soul gingerly then crash in violent finales. While not credited within the booklet, repetitive fragments of looped sounds also play themselves out amongst the webbed rhythms. This is world music of a most arresting sort--familiar but unknown, indigenous to no one culture in particular. SOLITUDES speaks to a collective spirituality, resonating with exquisite serendipity and a subversively latent power.
