These 51 songs chart the surprisingly broad and resilient career of The Turtles. Their earliest forays touched on folk-rock and even protest songs, as well as straight-ahead garage-rock ("Almost There"). Fronted by two unlikely pop stars, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, the portly duo found continuing fame in the '70s singing as Flo & Eddie (most notably with Frank Zappa). While many of the Turtles' '60s hits were penned by outside writers, this set shows their strengths as writers as well.
The Turtles hit their commercial peak with the sunny "Happy Together" and thereafter took ever more interesting turns. As pressures mounted from their label to turn in more radio-friendly fare, the band fully embraced the experimentation underway in the late '60s. Their last few albums are mature works, with strong material and inventive arrangements. They even enlisted Kinks leader Ray Davies to produce TURTLE SOUP. This two-disc set is a generous portrait of a band that deserves to be celebrated for more than just their handful of hit songs.
