Album Notes
Quicksilver Messenger Service includes: Gary Duncan, John Cipollina (vocals, guitar); Dino Valenti (vocals); Pete Sears, Nicky Hopkins, Michael Lewis (piano); David Freiberg (bass, background vocals); Skip Olson (bass); Greg Elmore (drums); Kathi McDonald (background vocals).
Recorded at Coloumbia Recording Studios, San Francisco, California between June 30 and August 29, 1975. Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
This was Quicksilver's reunion album, which meant that all six of the musicians who'd ever officially been in the band--including legendary folkie Dino Valente and legendary Brit piano man Nicky Hopkins--were on hand, as well as a large supporting cast including members of Jefferson Starship and guitarist John Cippolina's younger brother. Not surprisingly, this collectivist approach diluted the Quicksilver style somewhat; the Haight Ashbury dual guitar flashes are mostly a memory, although Cippolina structures the bluesy "Heebie Jeebies" around a particularly smoking riff and "Witches Moon" features him trading licks with second guitarist Gary Duncan just like in the old days. The rest of the album is pleasant, laid-back mid-'70s California pop and soul--think middling Doobie Brothers, perhaps, or genius Pablo Cruise.
