Soldier of Fortune: Payback (PC Games, 2007)

This game rocks!!!!!! Exactly as expected from the series involving John Mullins and "The Shop" cast. I cannot wait for the next in the series.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback is the third installment of the Soldier of Fortune game series. Unlike the previous two Soldier of Fortune games, which were developed by Raven Software utilizing the Quake 2 and Quake 3 engines, Payback was developed by Cauldron HQ, developed with Cauldron's in-house CloakNT engine, used in their previous First Person Shooter game, Chaser. This game is the first game of the series released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game was released on 14 November 2007. Upon being refused classification by Australia's OFLC, Activision released the game on February 28, 2008, in Australia.

As much as I'd like to rate this game highly, I can not. It was created for the consoles (X360/PS3) and back-ported to the PC and it shows. There is no dedicated server or good online matchmaking menu. Also, there are no graphical options that the user can set and there is no anti-cheat like Punkbuster.

The story is passable (not really central or important) and the gameplay has been cited as linear and predictable with scripted enemy spawning. This is true, but the levels are always fairly interesting graphically and the gunplay is (I think) awesome.

That is where this game shines. The CloakNT 3 engine used in this game (created in-house by Cauldron) looks and feels great. There is a very nice feel to all the guns in multiplayer (assuming you are not lagging) and there are a myriad of customizations to apply to the guns. This makes for a fairly fun and quick multiplayer game. The multiplayer suffers because there is no visible ping check nor dedicated server utility and no user maps because WorldStudio has not been released updated to be compatible with anything but Chaser (CloakNT 1).

These issues aside, it is a pretty fun MP game with a SP that will be largely forgotten.

I would pass on this game ... if you love Call of duty or rainbow six games
or medal of honor games or far cry games or even older soldier of fortune games LOL ...

the aiming is awful ... u have to watch the bullets (tracers) to actually hit terrorists ...the sights are way off ...and you will waste half your ammo by using their targeting circle ...

the game would have been awesome 6 years ago the graphics are ok for today but not great ... and the movement is crazy when you run.. no peaking
but you can jump ...

I liked the last soldier of fortune game "Double Helix" but that was 5 years ago ??? I think ..

A lot of people destroyed this game on reviews. Agree with some of their points but it is supposed to be a graphic yet unoriginal shooter. Have fun with it. Serious Sam 2 is a game with a lot of enemies, this is a game with a lot of gory body damage.
