Synopsis
Explores the nature of human relationships, finding that humans are "wired to connect," and bringing together the latest research in biology and neuroscience to reveal how one's daily encounters shape the brain and affect the body. "Humans have a built-in bias toward empathy, cooperation and altruism, provided we develop the social intelligence to nuture these capabilities in ourselves and others".

Psychologist Daniel Goleman synthesizes the research on brain science which seems to indicate that humans have an innate function for interpersonal communication. "We are wired to connect," writes Goleman. Most of this research came after Goleman's groundbreaking best seller EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, which he calls a companion volume to SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE. In brief, digestible sections, Goleman explains what the research says about the brain's neurocircuitry, and he applies it to common, everyday social situations. He makes one rethink concepts such as altruism, narcissism, achievement, and depression, as well as conflict and ease in business, school, and home. The insights in Goleman's book also point to ways of defining, measuring, and improving social intelligence, as well as valuing different manifestations of social intelligence. The social brain is something we all possess, and something that possesses us all.
