Album Notes The influential stride piano player James P. Johnson, who was a mentor to Fats Waller as well as inspiring two generations of jazz pianists, is heard here on a series of virtuoso instrumental pieces, including several popularized by Waller. Johnson's remarkable technique, as well as his musical sensitivity, are displayed on a selection that includes the uptempo, imaginatively realized "You've Got to Be Modernistic" and the energetic "Carolina Shout," as well as the delightful "If I Could Be With You (One Hour Tonight)" and "My Fate Is in Your Hands."
