This novel is intended for readers who like a historically compelling and suspenseful story.
This book's plot is wonderfully woven. The author weaves her story with compassion for both the men and women of nineteenth century China. Lisa See obviously has done vast research about the remote region she is writing about.
Tender, joyous and yet heart-breaking at times, this is a memorable book. After reading it, I found myself thinking more and more about some of the motivations of power in our twenty-first century society. This is not a book to be missed!

As true today as it was then, giving advice from one's own perspective without considering the situation of the recipient of the advice, can be devastating. The cliche 'walk in someone else's shoes before rendering judgement' has, here, the additional agony of broken feet.

A beautifully written story of friendship to break one's heart.

Beautiful rendition of the cultural relationships of women in China; the story about foot binding is both informative and riveting. I met the author who tells how this is part of her heritage as a Chinese American...a must read for anyone who wants to feel part of a world they might not know if this book wasn't written.

Secret fan and Secret women's language, geat study!!
Review created: 07/04/08

If you read my review of Peony In Love by this author you will know Lisa See has written some wonderful women's stories that are so well researched and told.

If you're curious about the secret women's language and the why's and how's of footbinding this book will fill in the gaps accurately...One feels like you are in that room at that moment seeing what the heroines are seeing..You will not put this aside until you turn the last page.

This is a keeper, a treasure to be read again and again..I intend to read all this author's books..
