Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel, "Snow Crash," plunges the reader into a not-too-distant, science fiction future. The book is set in the arena of California- sort of. America has become a "Burbclave" patchwork of city-states, the Mafia controls pizza delivery, and the Internet- existing as the Metaverse- looks something like every computer scientist's wetdream.

Hiro Protagonist- hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver- follows clues from the Bible, ancient Sumer and high technology, as he tries to thwart an attempt to take control of civilization. When he logs onto Metaverse- an imaginary place entered via computer, much like the Sims, avatars and all- Hiro encounters Juanita Marquez, a "radical" Catholic and computer whiz. She warns him to avoid the emonymous drug Snow Crash and gives him a file labeled Babel- think the Tower of Babel in Genesis. Another friend, sp ok/pk Da5id ignores Juanita's warning and "computer crashes" out of Metaverse into the real world, where he physically collapses. Hiro, Juanita, Y.T.- a freewheeling, skateboard-riding courier- and numerous other Burbclave residents, along with franchise power figures, drive the story arc toward finding out who is behind this bizarre "drug" with ancient roots.

"Snow Crash" is a fast-paced futuristic novel that intertwines everything from Sumerian myth to visions of a postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse. Stephenson's science fiction writing is bizarre- yet he ties his fantastic creation to the real world just enough to seem plausible. Although "Snow Crash" heavily leans on Sumerian culture and ideas, the imaginative juxtaposition of ancient and futuristic detail makes this book a fascinating read.

  Just an Amazing Read~

Just an amazing read. I picked this up and literally could not put it back down until it was done. The visions Neal Stephenson had of the internet and future technologies are eerily accurate. Even reading this book 10+ years after it was written, the ideas are still new.

I recommend this book to any cyberpunk fan outright. I do not want to get into specifics because discovering how great this book is as you read along is all the fun. Go into this book not knowing what to expect and it will not disappoint. Not for the faint of heart due to some pretty serious violence. The subject matter is also a bit deeper than most would expect, but it is presented with relevancy that doesn't draw down the rest of the action. There is an overwhelming sense of urgency to the novel and the main characters remain consistent throughout the read, keeping their sense of humor.

PROS – Fantastic vision of a not-so-distant future.
CONS – Was a very fast read and I enjoyed the book so much, I didn't want it to end.

Written a lifetime ago in internet years, it's still extremely relevant as it was then, predicting some areas that are clearing becoming true. It grabs you from the first moment. Truly a wild prediction of the future of the internet and impact on society. The US has become good at only Music, Software and high speed pizza delivery.

Great, vivid characters, exiciting, plot, with great moments of humor, this book is an AWESOME read! It's amazing how much of Stephenson's metaverse was a foreshadowing of the virtual enviroments that you see in places like the MMORPGs of today.

This is also the first book from Stephenson to really kick off his career, so if you're already a fan of his this is a must read.

Neil Stephenson’s visual description skills will blow you away. The likely and unlikely heroes and villains create an amazing story in an amazing world. History buffs should enjoy the unique look at the past while sci-fi people will love the unique future. Top ten books of all time.
