Sniper Elite (PlayStation 2, 2005)

niper Elite is not for everyone. If you are looking for a "run and gun" style shooter, then this is not the game for you. This, is a thinking man's shooter, which is good and bad.

The thinking part of the game plays out when you have to covertly position yourself (translated: a lot of crawling) in a strategic firing location and then make adjustments to your aim considering factors like gravity (adjust for bullet drop), your heart rate, wind, etc. There is a lot of front work that goes into taking just one shot.

Oh, but what a payoff! If you get all of your calculations right then you will be feasting on a buffet of single, double and even triple headshots! The best part of it is the "bullet cam". When you make an exceptional shot, the camera switches to a bullet cam that follows the bullet from muzzle to point of impact in satisfying albiet grizzly cinematic payoff for your effort.

The AI in the game can prove to add to your frustration as they are pretty good at flanking you after you reveal your location. The ensuing firefight is equally frustrating because as a sniper you are not well equipped for such an engagement and usually killed rather quickly.

Overall this is a solid game that offers something different from the glut of WWII and Vietnam wargames that are availble on the market.

I wanted this game as soon as I saw it, after playing a few minutes I loved it. The game works wonderfully, the shots react to gravity, wind and take skill to be good at. If you get noticed by enemies, they will react to anything you do, laying cover fire as one or two try to flank you. The good part is, you are also not restricted to a sniper rifle either, you get a silenced pistol, grenades, tnt and time bombs, and you can pick up a weapon from an enemy if needed for a close quarters combat situation. The enemy is incredibly hard, especially if you like going in guns blazing on the hardest mode (Sniper Elite).
Stealth and Shooting are a must, and the situations very. Missions range from meeting a contact in a war torn city, to assasinating a key leader, to helping your allies steal enemy tanks.
Plus, if you have played the Cabela's Big Game Hunter Game's, you will notice features like the camera following the bullet in slow motion for long range shots (pretty cool in a war game).
Overall this game has great gameplay and very good graphics, It's just sad that it's not that popular.

I had this game right out launch date but sold it because a situation in my family. I looked for it for years until recently got a hold of it. GReat animation,great story,simply the best game ever, for me. Highly recommended.

I bought this game for my husband and son. They both love this game. Once they start playing it, you can just forget getting their attention for anything else. I have not gotten to play it yet. I have watched it some and it looks very awesome. Maybe one day I will get to play it. :) The graphics are great, the sounds are good.

Outstanding game. For the individual that wants strategic game play along with difficult levles this is the game for you.

Well, let's see, hmmmmmm. The graphics are ok, the game is kind of slow to play, but overall it's a good game to run with on a rainy day when you've got several hours to kill.

the game is somewhat like a sim, more than a 1st person shooter, you have to look for your opponents but taking into account they are looking for you also.
its strategic, but definitely not a game you will finish in one or 2 hours.
because of its sim / strategic qualities this game is a very long game with varying types of missions. overall if looking for a challenging game this is it.
i personally recommend it though at times it frustrates me not finding my enemies while they are shooting at me due to they ambushing me, but its a good game.

This review is for the Playstation 2 version. I can't comment on the XBox game.
I play games mainly for the online experience, but single player is fun, too.
PRO's: Very tactical. You need to think before you move/shoot.
Graphics are pretty good, even online.
Great offline 2-player co-op, 8 player online with different game modes.
Easier to play than any SOCOM game.

I recommend this game for anyone who always grabs a sniper rifle while playing SOCOM or Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. It's like playing the sniper movie "Enemy at the Gates". If you like to stalk your prey, line up the perfect shot, then move to find your next victim, this game is for you. I hope more people pick it up and start playing it online. I played this game on XBox and had to have it for my PS2. As it turns out, the game didn't miss a step for graphics and quality.
This game is highly recommended.

I have to give this game a "good" 4/5 rating..Have enjoyed the game very much, however I was looking for more of an undercover long range type shooter game..this game does have levels that are true to that such as the "cathedral" or "train station" areas..but there is alot of crawling about close-up type of shooting..I thought the graphics are overall great, but again there is some instances of blocky images with some clipping..all that being said I still give this games "two guns up" for originality and playability with replay value quite high!

I you like sniper activity in other shooter games then you will love this game and play it over and over. Hope they make a 2nd for the PS3 and a 3rd and a 4th

I really like this game, because it makes you think about where to move to. Its a little annoying that sometimes you can hit people three times without dying. Basically you are put into a square/ rectanglish map and have to pick your own route to the target. It's rally a great game.

sniper elite is a great ps2 game that takes place around world war 2. the game features a neat trick called a bullet cam that allows the play ( after making a good long range shot) to see from the perspective of the bullet. the game follows the flight of the bullet until it hits the target. two player action is great but the split screen (top and bottom) is a little cramped, also the replay value is a little low.

This is a fairly rare title for the PS2 platform. It is not easy to find at gaming and video shops I frequent so when I spotted it on E-Bay I had to have it.

The action is fast paced and fun. When you use your scope and connect on a difficult shot the game responds by showing you the perspective of the shot just behind the bullet. You get to see the bullet as it travels and spins along the way to the target. Its sort of like the movie "The Matrix" if you recall how things slowed down when bullets were fired. You receive feedback on the distance of the shot in yards and of course you see exactly where the target was struck.

On the easy level, things are just that. Pretty easy. You can survive getting hit by the enemy and still play on though you definitely want to save your progress on most levels as it is time consuming to get killed and have to repeat certain things.

I like this game better than average. Playing two players is fun too but sometimes it is annoying to have to wait for the other guy to find you if you get seperated on the battlefield. The battlefield graphics are very good but the map function which you can switch to during combat to find your position is not all that useful in many of the scenarios. It's more or less a maater of intuition and keeping your eyes open for enemy troops and especially the enemy snipers who can be very good at popping out and shooting you if you're not stealthy.

This is probably one of the best games I have ever played. It is tactically sound; one of those games that you actually have to think before you move. It has multiple level; so it doesn't seem like a short game. I would say that this is a "MUST HAVE" for any gamers' library

I love this game, it is action packed and the use of the mil-dots or hash marks on the scope are relatively close to the yardage estimation of a real scope. I could play this game continuously and start over and take different approaches through the missions and still not get board.

i really enjoy this game. it is not quick-paced, and should not be played if you're a fan of shoot em up killing games, but if you enjoy thinking things out, and planning the perfect stealth kill, this game is for you.

A great, great game! The graphics were good, the sniper skill required was realistic, plenty of missions, cool weapons, great plot. I loved the use of strategy and stealth.

Very good sniper game. You have to take your time while playing game or you will get killed quickly. Sneak around like a sniper. I have been playing game a couple of days on easy and just now got past first level. I wish i could play it online.

Excellent first person shooter game. You are sniper during WWII missions. Various weapons, but one used most is sniper rifle. Various levels can take into account distance, wind, and even heartbeat. Sentries and other soldiers react to your presence, so you have to stay low, and concealed. Taking an exceptional sniper shot follows the bullets path and shows the hit. Other weapons include silenced pistol, grenades, TNT, time bomb, and other german machine guns. Game runs on you being a stealth character, so often you are crawling, waiting, or otherwise concelaed, so don't look for a fat-paced action game, but if you want a talent-based, strategic game this is one of the best I have found. p.s. Check out Black too. That is the best shooter game, with more action than this, I have found so far. Cheers!

Like being the under dog? Like playing hide and seek? This game is just amazing. I can't stop playing it. You can play Co-op, play online, or just go in under cover by yourself. One of the best things about this game is being so still and calm just waiting for the right "head shot". The attention to detail great. And the fact that the bombs going off and planes crashing can throw you off or give you great noise cover. Can't waite for the sequel it can only get better. Patience is a key factor in this game. Rushing in will only get you DEAD. For Mature Adult Gamers!

This game was pretty good. It has very good graphics with a cool Co-op mode that you play with another player. It is based on World War II. Also, it's not all sniping. In most of the levels you move around a city and such. I definately recommend this game.
