Album Notes
The Smithereens: Pat DiNizio (vocals, guitar); Jim Babjak (guitar); Mike Mesaros (bass); Dennis Diken (drums).
Additional personnel: Belinda Carlisle (vocals).
Though it was in fact the Smithereens' third full-length album, the
cover and misleading title of SMITHEREENS 11 were an homage to the
classic Rat Pack film OCEAN'S 11. It proved to be one of their most
successful records, largely on the strength of the single "A Girl Like
You," on which lead singer Pat DiNizio received vocal support from the
Go-Gos' Belinda Carlisle. Picking up on a thread that began with their
second album, GREEN THOUGHTS, the band edges a bit further away from Merseybeat-influenced power-pop, towards a heavier rock sound, with thick guitars and booming drums. DiNizio's songwriting instincts proved as dependable as ever, though, and the more hard-edged tunes are interspersed with lovely, melodic pop gems that still show the clear
influence of '60s groups like the Left Banke and the Beau Brummels. Even when reaching the heights of fame, the Smithereens never disavowed their roots.

Editorial Reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ..The Smithereens invoke and advance the song-oriented values of the Sixties...a gem of an album..

The main reason I like this is because it reminds me life back in 1990...my then-husband bought the tape and we listened to it alot then. Our daughter was 10 at the time, and life was great. We were both still relatively young moving up, with alot of starry-eyed dreams for ourselves and our daughter. I cannot say that this is the best music ever made, but for that time, it was trendy and popular. If you like 80's style dance music, this is for you. My biggest complaint is that all of the songs on this CD sound very similar to each other. There is no mistaking that "Smithereen Sound". Nearly every song is the same tempo and style, but I love listening to it and find myself rockin' in the seat of my car as I tool along the streets of Indiana. I give it a very strong "Good" rating for anyone who likes that kind-of nostalgic, foot-tappin', dance music of the 90's.

This is a decent CD although it only has a run time of around 36 minutes. Considering the longer run time of an average CD, its clear there was plenty of room for better songs than some of those included on the disc. The biggest omissions were some of the great songs off Especially For You and Green Thoughts. While this disc is a must for the hardcore Smithereens fan, you would be better served with the Blown to Smithereens compilation if you only intend to buy one CD.

OK, I'm prejudiced - this band and I are residents of New Brunswick, NJ. Still, these hometown heroes were this famous band and I had never heard their music so I invested a few bucks through Ebay and checked them out.

What was the worse that could happen?

How about the best thing that could have happened? Music honed from years on the very demanding concert circuit and college kids who will not just shut you off but tell their friends have made this band not just pop-friendly but radio-ready as well. Totally under-appreciated!

What is the sound? Ok, you've heard this before but here is my twist: it isn't modern-day Beatles but how about if John Lennon had a young, cool backup band and still made music - not the radical "save the world" dreary stuff but the early, cool, stuff but still wrote deep lyrics when the time was right.

Check them out and join the legions - this is a great band!
