Though the titular princess is on par with the rest of Disney's essential heroines, most of the fun arises from the trio of charming fairies entrusted with her care: Flora, Fauna, and Meriweather. Meanwhile the evil Malificent may just be Disney's most chilling villainess. This classic makes wondrous use of Tchaikovsky's same-titled ballet score, which earned SLEEPING BEAUTY an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

This epic tale of love and triumph is another disney masterpiece that will live on forever. The dragon scene is really cool and when they made this movie, they used a wide screen type of animation that was uncommon at the time. As with everything else, when they do it, they do it right and big! When Disney first stuck their foot in the DVD waters they did it slowly, offering movies without major extras and at a price well above their competition. Disney finally got it through their heads that DVD has broken through to become the standard format for the new millenium. Several other Disney Disks have gotten this deluxe treatment. Their collaborations with Pixar; Toy Story One and Two, A Bugs Life, Monsters Inc were among the first. Tarzan, Atlantis, Beauty and the Beast as well as Dumbo and a variety of lesser films have editions chock full of extras as well. It was fitting that Snow White was released as a Double Disk set last year and they have followed that up with one of my faves, Sleeping Beauty. The film has been remastered all around. Crisp new sound and picture wrapped up with a bevy of extras that will make any cinemafile drool. Along with the standard documentaries and commentaries. This edition has something I wish had been packaged with every disk released to date; A widescreen to pan and scan comparison. Finally I can show my friends and family why widescreen is preferable to 'full screen'. Make sure you don't let this one slip away for another generation. More than stands the test of time. This film has my favorite Disney villain, Maleficent. Beautiful film, can still be enjoyed by people of all ages. I did most enjoy the DVDpackage for the film. This movie is great, but as I tried to watch it through the eyes of a child, I was a little taken aback. Maleficent, the "mistress of all evil", is quite scary and when she turns into a dragon, she is terrifying. There is fire and brimstone and even a reference to the fiery pits of hell. It is a shame, becuase Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) is charming and good fairies are so cute. There is a scene where the kings and the steward get drunk and that is also a shame, but my children don't realize what they are drinking and why they are acting so silly, so that goes over their head. Actually, as I write this review, I am wondering why I have let them watch this at all. It is a little much for young children. Review ID: 10000000001865005 Was this review helpful?
