Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball (1999)

I saw an article in Newsweek recently and this book was mentioned.I could not wait to get it because rarely does one see books like this. This tells of a seven generation family who up until the Civil War owned and used them to help with the rice plantation. How wonderfully well Mr. Ball tells the story of slavery and their white folks.
I could not put this book down. I somehow missed this book when it was on the "big list." I think everyone should read this book.

The account of the Ball famiy and the life they and thier slave lead is trully inspiring. Balls potrayol of both side may be the first book ment to enlighten indtead of condemn. His Honesty of the often lopsided views allows views of the diverse lifestyle on the cooper river were not always brutal, yet he portrays the hardships of the slaeve that bell owned. a look into history andtraditions of the timeis trully inspiring.
