I purched this book after I saw a PBS interveiw with the Author. It looked quite intruguing. After reading this book I have a much deeper insite into the African American whom lived in the south at that time. The horrors they had to endure because of they area they lived in, was inhuman. It is a good book to read and very eye opening. I am truly glad I took the time to read this book. I will pass it on to others for reading. I would recommend this book in a history class. As it is a part, as ugly as it is, of American history.

I loved this book because I love history. In addition, I grew up in the North and did not personally see these atrocities take place, accept for the lynchings and churches burned and blown up, etc. on the national news. I currently live in the deep South among Rednecks, some of whom probably still personally feel that those of color are "uppity" and no longer "know their place." That irritates me to no end since I was raised colorblind and to accept all people as equal, regardless of color or race.

The book covers a topic in a period of American History of which that I was unaware. I have found no other source that speaks to the conditions that existed in the deep south for Blacks between the end of Reconstruction and World War II. While the contents often left me angry for a moment because of the way people were treated, in the final analysis I was left with a better understanding of why Blacks generally have had such a difficult time progressing in so many areas of society in the U. S.. I think the book or others that cover the same topic should be required reading for ALL high school children and properly discussed to promote better understandings between races. No guilt should be felt by anyone due to what happened during the period in question nor should anyone expect anything but a better understanding of some contributors to differences in progress made by members of different races.
Summarily, I think it is a great book!
