Album Notes Dump: James McNew. Additional personnel: Mike Morgane Lhote (farfisa). Originally released only on cassette, THAT SKINNY M*********** WITH THE HIGH VOICE is a collection of seven Prince songs recorded by Dump, the one-man-band side project of Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew. Titled after a self-mocking line from Prince's legendary BLACK ALBUM, the collection emphasizes the poppier and more psychedelic aspects of Prince's oeuvre, even on McNew's covers of Prince's funkier dance tracks, like "1999" and "Erotic City." Focusing on Prince's early-80s golden age, the album also includes brilliant versions of "Pop Life" and "Raspberry Beret," from Prince's psychedelic-soul masterpiece AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY. Three earlier tracks, "When U Were Mine," "The Beautiful Ones," and the rare ballad "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" are also included. All the songs feature McNew's winsome vocals and charmingly casual instrumental style, presenting an entirely new and fetching view of Prince's best work.
Editorial Reviews ...Although it would be unfair to directly compare McNew to The Artist, it's tempting to predict that maybe one day the alter will pay tribute to the former. The music is there, waiting for 'artists' of the world to discover it... Magnet (04/01/1999)
