I own the Shrimper cassette, so can't really comment on the later cd version that adds the last 5 tracks.

On one level, this record is just what it seems to be: an indie rocker with a bedroom 4-track, giving some legendary songs the low-fi treatment. But this neglects the depth of James McNew's talent and creativity. The overall mood is gorgeous, sensitive, sad and hopeful, and the combination of McNew's simple, low-fi arrangements and sweet, warbly voice with Prince's best songs is just a wonderful listen, even after 10 years.

"The Beautiful Ones" and "Pop Life" are the highpoints, the former achingly beautiful and touching and the latter a great shimmering epic, delivered with an easygoing style.

This album has only grown on me with time, and I think fans of "The Velvet Underground," Big Star's "Sister Lovers," or "The Great Lost Kinks Album" will find a lot to like here.

Anything by Dump is worth getting, but this album's his triumph.

  Amazing and better than expected.

Dump aka James McNew, better known as the bassist of Yo La Tengo has put together a very cool set of Prince covers.
I bought this cold; having not heard a single track. I did read a review on allmusic.com that was favorable.
That being said covering Prince can be a tough job but Dump has done it and done it well. These are not note-for-note remakes. Dump doesn't try to sound like Prince or The Revolution.
If you are a Prince fan I think you'll be pleased at these versions.
If you like minimalist but inventive musicianship I think this is for you; Dump keeps sparse on most of these songs; too many bands attempting cover version try to hard.
Amazon.com doesn't have new copies and used ones go there for $35 and up.
I found this on ebay for under $20. It's in a digipak and there's no real info or liner notes so Dump keeps it simple all over.
Enjoy this anyway.
