A (relatively) Unknown Gem
I own the Shrimper cassette, so can't really comment on the later cd version that adds the last 5 tracks.
On one level, this record is just what it seems to be: an indie rocker with a bedroom 4-track, giving some legendary songs the low-fi treatment. But this neglects the depth of James McNew's talent and creativity. The overall mood is gorgeous, sensitive, sad and hopeful, and the combination of McNew's simple, low-fi arrangements and sweet, warbly voice with Prince's best songs is just a wonderful listen, even after 10 years.
"The Beautiful Ones" and "Pop Life" are the highpoints, the former achingly beautiful and touching and the latter a great shimmering epic, delivered with an easygoing style.
This album has only grown on me with time, and I think fans of "The Velvet Underground," Big Star's "Sister Lovers," or "The Great Lost Kinks Album" will find a lot to like here.
Anything by Dump is worth getting, but this album's his triumph.
