This double album import is a interesting juxtaposition. The Point and Skidoo on the same disc makes sense and then again, it doesn't. The Point is a wonderful animated tale that Nilsson wrote which was first aired on ABC with narration by Dustin Hoffman. On the album Harry does all the songs and the narration of this story of Oblio and his dog Arrow. Oblio, being the only individual in the land of Point to be born without one is banished to the Pointless Forest. As he and Arrow discover all things have a point. The album contains the hit "Me and My Arrow" along with other typical Nilsson tunes. A great companion to the VHS or DVD version of the animated feature. It appeals to young and old alike.
Skidoo, on the other hand, is a soundtrack of a film that pretty much tanked at the box office. George Tipton, a longtime Nilsson colleague, does the orchestrations to Nilsson's music for the soundtrack. Other than the tune "I Will Take You There" there isn't much here to recommend this album to anyone other than fans looking to complete their Nilsson discography.
The disc contains some bonus tracks: "The Girlfriend"—an early version of what became "Best Friend" which was used for the series The Courtship of Eddie's Father, "Down in the Valley" and "Buy My Album". Not bad, but not great. Again for the fans of Nilsson, but not the casual listener.
Should you buy the album? If you love Nilsson, a resounding yes. If not, maybe just for The Point which folks seem to think is hard to find. I guess it's related to how picky you are with which disc release you want to buy. If it's the original CD release, yes they are somewhat scarce. But the sound quality of this release seems just fine to my ears and should suffice for all but the most persnickety audiophile/collector. The Point in any case is worth owning whether it is this disc or another release. You might even find yourself enjoying Skidoo too. Two albums for the price of one—not a bad investment at all.
