Recorded Castle Oaks Studios, Calabasas, California and at The Bamboo Room, Westlake Village, California. A cleansing Pacific rain. New England in high Autumn. The California coastline. Glacier Point in Yosemite. Who better to capture the drama of these settings than composer/keyboardist David Arkenstone? From "Full Sail," a jaunty tribute to the freedom of the open ocean, to the driving rhythm of the jazz-tinged "Sunset Highway," Arkenstone's American journey is one of discovery, introspection and celebration. It covers not just distance but time. In "Sketches of the Dream," a wistful piece for synthesizer and soprano sax, Arkenstone imagines the dreams of the ancient tribes of the Southwest. "Voice of the New Land" conveys the sense of both mystery and revelation that explorers must have felt on arriving at American shores. "The American Journey," with its crashing symphonic percussion and hoedown violins, is Arkenstone's triumphant vision of the land. On the final track, "Surrounded by Beauty," Arkenstone eschews electronic instruments, allowing the Recording Arts Orchestra of Salt Lake City to voice his gentle elegy, as warm and peaceful as a Midwestern summer sunset.
