Producers: D-Shot, Studio Ton, Femi Ojetunde. The cover of D-Shot's sophomore release features the rapper standing next to a jazzed-up jeep and smoking a cigar under the title SIX FIGURES. The image screams out "Another brother livin' large in America," and the album's contents don't disappoint. What makes this album stand out above it's contemporaries is the clear, uncluttered production and smooth, New-Jack-Swing grooves. In fact, these tracks go down so easily, you almost don't notice the message. D-Shot's lyrics tell tales of young black men in America trying to rise above their circumstances by any means necessary. Lines like "Enhancing my skills by using my brain" from "Duck" contrast with the crack dealer lamenting "Look what they done to me--they shut my business down" on "Out Tha' Pen." But in spite of (or because of) the inherent contradictions, SIX FIGURES is a great hip-hop record.
Editorial Reviews ...Not only does D-Shot raise his own status and that of some lesser known Bay Area rappers, he corrals some of the Bay's best R&B voices... Rap Pages (08/01/1997)
