Album Notes Personnel: Rosemary Clooney (vocals); Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone); Warren Vache (cornet); Dan Barrett (trombone); John Oddo (piano); Ed Bickert (guitar); Michael Moore (bass); Joe Cocuzzo (drums). Recorded at Penny Lane Studios, New York, New York in August 1986. Includes liner notes by Alan Bergman & Marilyn Bergman. Like any number of '50s-era popular singers, Rosemary Clooney had a second late-stage career as a jazz cabaret artist. In her case it veered more towards the jazz side than the cabaret since she was always such a musicial singer in the first place. Early or late career, this 1987 Johnny Mercer set on Concord is simply one of her best. In fact, it is one of the greatest tributes of its kind, especially during a retro period when singers were rummaging through what came to be known as the Great American Songbook. It's a relaxed session but artful, with the best Concord session men on hand--saxophonist Scott Hamilton, cornetist Warren Vache, and pianist John Oddo. JOHNNY MERCER is also an object lesson in singing jazz standards with conviction. Of course, Clooney has the requisite natural swing, but most of all she believes that these lyrics still refer to something in the real world. Even at her commercial peak in the early '50s, she had a particularly warm, down-to-earth style and she loses none of that in her close, intimate readings of "I Remember You" and "P.S. I Love You," a note-perfect "Laura," and all the others.
