Despite winning the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year trophy in 1994, Chely Wright has yet to become a household name. SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, Wright's fourth release, may be the album that does the trick. Featuring such guest artists as Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill and Alison Krauss, SINGLE WHITE FEMALE is a solid collection of songs with traditional country themes, updated with a nineties twist. In the upbeat title track, the narrator is trying to attract that special someone--but she uses a personal ad to do it. In the clever "Rubbin' It In," the singer suspects the entire world--including her cable company--of conspiring to remind her that her lover has dumped her. If SINGLE WHITE FEMALE is ballad-heavy, it's because Wright's voice seems particularly suited for intensely emotional material. She particularly shines on "Picket Fences"--a self-penned song about a woman who refuses to follow the traditional path of "get a job, say 'I do' and settle yourself down." With SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, Chely Wright proves that she's ready to take her place among the famous names that contributed to the making of the album. This cd is full of great songs including the # 1 title track. There are a few fast fun songs and a few slow sad songs. I wish more singles off of this cd would have been released to radio. In my opinion the best song is "The Fire". Once again another great cd by Chely Wright. Review ID: 10000000000843898 Was this review helpful? Release Date (CD): 1999 Genre: Country Review ID: 10000000002552535 Review created: 03/28/00 by: iowamommy -- a member of Epinions Pros: Nice mix of songs that many can identify with Cons: Could use a few more upbeat songs I have enjoyed Chely Wright s music for some time, but this was the first time I broke down and bought an album of hers. After watching the song It Was for the millionth time on CMT (what else would I watch feeding the baby in the middle of the night?), I decided this would be worth trying out. The only other song I was familiar with on that CD was Single White Female, which was another CMT hit that made people sit up and take notice. I rarely find myself buying a CD, as my husband owned a DJ business for about the last 20 years and, luckily, I have an amazing music collection at my disposal.. Review ID: 10000000000265794 Review created: 08/06/00 by: Sarv -- a member of Epinions Pros: Her voice and passion Cons: Could be a few more pick-me-up songs This Single White Female has come out of nowhere to take the Country world by storm. While she's no Faith Hill or Shania Twain, yet, she's got the ability, personality, looks, and desire to be like them: Country Diva's. Her latest album, Single White Female is her best album to date, not just by my opinion, but by the sales of her record, which is doing better than all previous albums. I'll say up front that I've yet to hear any of the other records she's released, but I've heard a few songs, and they've all been good. The CD There are five songs that really caught my attention here: Single... Review ID: 10000000000265799 Review created: 07/13/99 by: sdlind -- a member of Epinions Pros: Good mixture of traditional and pop styles Cons: Requires thoughtful and patient listening Chely Wright's fourth album has found this artist hitting a comfortable stride with her art. Her first two albums found her seeking a musical style that fit this young woman and the results were only moderately successful. The first album was more traditional country while the second was filled with a lot of pop tunes that most likely confused any existing fans. Her last album, Let Me In, produced at least one major hit, "Shut Up And Drive," which finally got her noticed by radio and Country Music fans in general. Single White Female contains a lot more potential hits. The title song leads... Review ID: 10000000000265798 Review created: 11/30/99 by: Torn_Willows -- a member of Epinions Pros: Great New Songs, Mature Vocals. Cons: Majority Of Album Slower. The fourth album to come from the country star Chely Wright is 1999's "Single White Female". I was totally crazy about getting this album when I first saw the video for the title track "Single White Female", which is awesome. When the album finally, came out I purchased it and flew home to listen to this new product. I was surprised to find that the majority of this album had a slower pace to it, only spotted with a fast song. Despite the fact that the album consisted of mostly slow songs, I have found this album to be the most mature album Chely has done to date. Her vocals seem to have...
