Singin' in the Rain (DVD, 2002, Two Disc Special Edition)

Aside from the widely accepted fact that this 1952 MGM Musical version of "Singin' In The Rain" is one of the finest pictures ever made, it now ranks as one of the best Special Edition DVD collections ever assembled.

Sadly, the routine packaging for this Special Edition does not communicate the exceptional preparation that went into production of this two-disc set. This collection represents the finest that MGM ever offered, and though poorly marketed and promoted, this edition is a Treasure! Two Thumbs... Five Stars... A++++!!

Ironically, this Special Edition DVD of MGM's classic film is released by... Warner Home Video. (Somewhere, Jack Warner is having a good laugh over this one!)

Disc One includes audio commentary from Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Cyd Charisse, Kathleen Freeman (filmed shortly before her recent passing), Stanley Donen, Betty Comden, Adolph Green; with added commentary from contemporary filmmaker, Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge). In addition, there are several "Easter Eggs" that allow the viewer to watch related bonus film footage on the subject at hand. The perfectly restored Technicolor film is as brilliant as the day it was filmed.

Disc Two includes two documentaries; one of which is hosted by Debbie Reynolds herself. The documentaries integrate classic interviews from Hollywood legends including Gene Kelly, Mickey Rooney, Vincent Minnelli, and many more. In addition, there is a stills gallery; film outtakes; and a magnificent collection of historic film musicals from the 1920's and 1930's.

This is film preservation at it's finest, and everyone involved deserves high praise for this wonderful collection.

This is a classic Hollywood musical with some of the most entertaining song and dance performances ever filmed. It's enjoyed by people of all ages. I recently loaned my copy to our local school, where 3rd & 4th graders were performing the song "Singing In the Rain" in their spring assembly. They loved seeing the musical numbers and played them over and over. The "Make them Laugh" number done by Donald O'Connor is one of the best routines ever recorded. A REAL musical treasure!

I love the deleted scenes from the movie. Seriously this is one of the greatest movies ever and just to see it so beautifully on DVD is mind blowing to say the least. I am happy I purchased this DVD and you will be as well.

Wonderful movie, if you enjoy the musicals from the 50's. It's a humourous look at the movie business itself at the time sound was added to film. The dance scenes with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor are mind-blowing for their fast-pace choreography and athleticism. Some are just outright funny, too. Laugh out loud funny. Debbie Reynolds is fantastic, too, at just 18 years old. No cursing, no nudity, only good old-fashioned fun. There is one dance with Cyd Charesse (sp) where her legs look two miles long. Sensuous, but not overtly so, at least by today's standards.
The second disc has two full length programs, one a collage of Paul Freed's work in the MGM Musicals. Very interesting with many scenes from old movies. A lot of Judy Garland singing and dancing. This is great to note other movies to watch in the future. The second show is a "Making SINGIN' IN THE RAIN", hosted by Debbie Reynolds. Insightful, particularly if you are a fan of this very popular film. Also, SITR used songs from past films, and there are several black and white scenes from the films where the songs originated.
Super stuff and captivating.
Of course, the first disc has the film itself. You must get this set if you love musicals and clean movie entertainment.

Timeless classic musical. A great addition to any DVD collection. If you are a Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, or Debbie Reynolds fan, you will love this movie. Yes, Debbie Reynolds can sing and dance! Gene Kelly splashing around in the rain is a classic!

Always my favorite musical. I remember it was going to finally be on t.v. back in November of 1963 and was cancelled due to John Kennedy's assasination. My granddaughter likes musicals and I wanted her to have this one. Got it in rapid time and had it for Xmas.

The DVD remastered version of the film has the feel of new. I viewed my copy on a wide screen plasma with uprating blueray/dvd player. The famous scene of Gene Kelly dancing in the rain allows viewing of individual rain drops. Amazing, and a testament to the craft that use to exist in Hollywood. I recommend a copy to anyone who loves classics.

This is one of my family's all time favorite movies. The three best dancers of their time in one movie. I was just going to give this classic musical as a gift for my daughter, but decided I needed to keep a copy for myself too. This is a must own for all those movie musical lovers out there.

A classic with a heart - watching this movie is like taking a day off. The dance numbers are absolutely incredible and SO worth seeing! The acting is great too. Heart-warming movie too good not to share with everyone!

This is the classic song and dance movie out of just a few in the world made back in the day that was worth watching and men and women dancers so talented that the show *So you think you can dance* would not be in the line if these kind of dancers was still around. God bless all those that appreciate the good ole' song and dance routine. Gene Kelly is especially excellent in this movie as he was in others but not like this. Fred Astaire was as inventive also but not quite with the flair of tapping that Gene was very capable of. So if you enjoy a good feeling movie and into actual *Talent* in a movie and go to bed with good feeling this is the movie to watch..Of course the acting is a little cheesie but these were song and dance movies not acting films. If you want song and dance with acting i would suggest Bing and family. South Pacific is another good one(the Mitzi Gaynor version),she was a doll back in her day and could act and sing. But singing in the rain is in a league of it's own. If you don't own it you should..By the way i play guitar and i play progressive rock like steve vai,malmsteen and such so if you think a rocker can't have class,well you just read it.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She rented in once before, and absolutely loved it. The only thing I might regret is that she'll watch it over and over again!

All of our family has always enjoyed this movie for a long time. So when we found it on line at a reasonable price we got it. We are glad we were able to get it on DVD. The kids have enjoyed watching it.

This is the all time Gene Kelly classic. The songs that are sung in this movie are enough reason to buy this movie. Then you add Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Cyd Charisse and you have sheer ecstasy. The dance number with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse is about as sensual as it could get when this movie was made without it being banned for being too risque. It is a great movie to watch and own.

bought this for a friend who will be giving it to her daughter. It is her favorite movie so she will be enjoying it very much. The DVD was brand new and sealed.

A great bonding moment for the family, from 5 yrs. to 71 yrs. So much fun, they just don't make them like this, anymore. The stars are icons. Everyone should take the time to see this and introduce it to succeeding generations.

One of the best musicals ever made that stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kay. A must have movie for any fan of the classics. I highly recommend this movie.

It is an all time classic movie that my wife had wanted and when I came across it at a reasonable price, I bought it for her. This particular one is the special edition, two DVD set with behind the scenes looks and biography about the movie and the actors. I purchased it on e-bay because I trust them to monitor the sellers. I knew that I would get what I paid for in a reasonable time.

I have always enjoyed this movie. Gene Kelly dancing and Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Conner as his partners in this movie make it most enjoyable. It pokes a light hearted finger at the old Hollywood system and makes you laugh and marvel at the dance routines and singing numbers. Some of my friends don't like it because the singing and dancing isn't quite "life" but it is a good movie for some and a great movie for most.
