Album Notes The notion of "transcription," the re-setting of music for one or more instruments or voices, is a modern notion, insofar as it implies that a piece is intentionally concerned for a specific instrumentation and its attendant idiomatic features. This disc offers transcriptions of Bach's music-cantata movements, chorales, and keyboard variations-for accompanied cello, and two cello concertos by Boccherini. As the second installment of Yo-Yo Ma's entree into period instrument performance, it is bound to attract wide attention, from the merely curious to connoisseurs of authentic performance practice. As in volume one, Ton Koopman's transcriptions keep Ma's elegant phrasing and nimble technique in the foreground. The carefully-balanced interaction between cello and ensemble in the Boccherini concertos is indicative of the sincerity and thoughtfulness of all involved.
