Silverplated Flatware by Tere Hagan (1998, Paperback, Revised)

I needed an easier way to identify my silverplate. Thank goodness for this book. It is all at my fingertips and extremely reliable. Could use a few additions of obscure makers even if the pieces are of little value just for inventory sake. It makes my cataloging must easier and faster. I don't know how I survived so long without it.

Ms. Hagan has done her homework well on this one. I have two other guides to silverplate patterns and now this is the one I reach for first. She not only shows drawings of each and every pattern she is aware of, but lists them in different places if they were made by different companies. She has assigned to each pattern a letter code which tells the reader if in her opinion the collectibility of the pattern. The book has a section for patterns she has not been able to identify. If a pattern has more than one name she lists them both. If you are thinking of selling old silver, buying old silver, or simply want to know that pattern name of pieces you already have I think this book would be most helpful.

I have had your book about 2 months now and I have found it very valuble. I don't use the price guide much because most of the flatware I get is from auctions and I usually resell the items I get based on what I pay for it. If I took the time to really clean it I know it would be worth more but I don't bother so the pricing in the book is not very useful. However I really like the idea of being able to know the maker and identifying them for my listing.
I would recomend this guide to anyone who is looking for one.

I love to buy and sell silverplate. This guide is great in find the pattern and rating it as far as pattern, market, and most of all the amount that it should most likely be worth.

I like the book a lot! It is easy to understand and follow as well as an easy guide to identifying many silverplate patterns that have mystified me.

Besides the subject matter, I bid on this book because it was priced very low and I really couldn't lose if it failed to live up to my expectations. Thankfully it was a great bargain and has seen lots of use since I got it from the mail.

I would recomment using this guide for identifying flatware made by major manufactures.

Great book for identifying different flatware from all over the world - great large, colorful and black and white pictures. Recommend for anyone trying to find out what pattern they have to add to - also for the collector to identify brands that are great for collecting - ones that are very desirable, etc.

I love the illustrations. I bought it because I borrowed a friend's copy and it was helpful in identifying a pattern from my grandmother. I have since become very interested in serving pieces. Knowing the pattern helps a lot when searching on Ebay.
I wish it contained a glossary of silverplate terms and ratings like AA, etc.

This is an excellent book, even though it is a 1998 Edition.We were able to identify the 5 different patterns of silver we had along with the date they were made.As far as the price, we had an idea on what was popular or sought after, and we had something to go by when pricing our auction. It has great drawings of each pattern, marks and manufacturers.It covers Gorham, Oneida, Wm Rogers,Sears and Roebucks,and many many more.
We were happy to add this book to our collection.Remember this is a book of Silverplated Flatware and not Sterling Silver which is the most collected and expensive.

Having collected many pieces of vintage flatware, sterling & silverplated, I needed something to help in identifying patterns and giving the value of these pieces. Being able to shop on eBay, helped me find just the book I needed without the hassle of going from Book Store to Book Store. Had many choices on eBay, but this is the one that would benefit me most. Purchasing it and having it sent out immediately was so convenient and time saving, I couldn't be happier. It was received so quickly and I found it to be "just what I was looking for". Excellent illustrations to easily identify the countless patterns that exist. No complaints here. Everything worked out beautifully.

For those who collect silverplate and have labored over the identification of lesser collected patterns, this book is helpful. There are indexes and an introductory chart that are very useful. The pictures are detailed enough to feel fairly certain that you have the correct pattern. Some searching page by page is still necessary for those pieces of unknown age or manufacturer. Patterns are grouped chronologically within manufacturers for the most part. Many ebay sellers of silverplate refer to this book, with page number of pattern noted. I personally enjoy looking at all the patterns and have seen several patterns that I would love to come across and collect!
