  Silent Running with Bruce Dern

Before Star Wars, and Battlestar Galactica this film captured the visuals that so many of us imagined how life in space would look. Too bad the musical score didn't measure up. Don't expect space battles, however. This is a story about how the Earth has lost its beauty due to over population and no control over pollution. Set in space on a ship for growing forests in orbit around Saturn, Bruce Dern's acting was involving and managed to make this film one of my sci-fi favorites.

I saw this movie years ago - 1971 - in the theater, then on HBO in the 80's but no more ... It has impacted me whenever I saw it - Bruce Dern is not my favorite actor but he's perfect for this role! He portrays a sensitive man on a mission to save the earth's - our earth's - disappearing landscapes. Futuristic ... even prophetic ... some of us knew even back then what was coming. Of course, Al Gore couldn't be bothered back then when there was no fame and glory for those of us "crazy people" who tried to bring it to the attention of those in positions of power and authority!
So you'll find yourselves on the Valley Forge, a space freighter, with a precious cargo - the last of some of earth's botanical specimens. There are incredible little droids who tend to the gardening ... a great scene where Dern teaches them to play poker. The film is filled with selfish decisions as well as sacrificing decisions, humanity at its best and worst ... it is well worth the viewing and I'm thrilled to own it!

Knew Doug Trumbull while he was making this film. I wanted to collect this DVD. It's strange to see how much of prophet he was at that time. I hope that we never go there? The film was brilliant in it's special effects. The storyline was the
downfall of the film. Can't justify killing by your good intentions.

As a classic science fiction story, it is very contemporary in its message. Its message of the environment is poignant and applies more so at this time and age.

  An engrossing, beautiful, flakey movie

I have always been captivated by this movie. The visuals of the geodesic dome greenhouses travelling through space were unforgetable. The three robots Huey, Louie, and Dewey were the first non-human format robots I recall seeing in SciFi movies. The space hippie Bruce Dern was his usual flakey self. The plot is a little weak, but who cares. This was a major tree hugger movie, which I am not, but I love this movie. The extra material on the DVD I have is worth having, as I had no idea where the movie was actually filmed.

Donning asbestos underwear for anticipated flames .....
I LOVED the soundtrack, especially the songs by Joan Baez. I still remember the day I bought the vinyl LP and got it home, 20 years ago. It was a clear, transluscent, clorophyl colored green color.

  Silent Running Still A Classic
Review created: 09/30/09

I have enjoyed science fiction since I was 8 years old. I saw this movie 20 years ago and enjoyed it immensely. The cinema school in ohio distributed a brochure at our area public library. I browsed through it and planned on attending the night of it's showing. On a whim I pulled the DVD up on Ebay, placed a bid and won. I enjoyed it even more then the first time. It was apparent the cinematography was old school, but it allowed one to immerse themselves into the message the director was conveying. It was also nice to enjoy it in our own livingroom. Now I can watch wheneverI want, and as many times as I want.

I believe most science fiction predicts the future. Jules Verne did it, Gene Roddenberry did it. Silent Running depicts the last trees from earth being saved in space ships. Sound like something that might happen in reality?

Excellent movie, well before it's time. Just like revisiting the Biosphere II in Arizona, only in space. Classic robots or droids, and a great plot to consider for the future of the earth............

Despite the campy writing and cheesy special effects (dating the film itself) this movie has a great message about one of the possible futures for the planet earth. As one of the pre Star Wars sci-fi films, this one ranks high on the list of classics. The music, written by Professor Peter Schickle (of P.D.Q. Bach fame)is innovative and futuristic sounding.

  Silent Running, a 70's sci-fi classic!
Review created: 02/01/08

Classic 1970's tree hugger meets 2001 Space Odyssey. Set in the near future, Earths natural resources have been trashed. A fleet of cargo ships carrying the last surviving forests orbit out in space, waiting to re-green the Earth. The special effects are very well done from 1972 as are the cargo ships and domes. These are all models not computer graphics. There are 3 small robot assistants that are great, actual midgets inside. Also done well is the feeling of being on a space cargo ship. The acting is fairly good as Bruce Dern plays the tragic, nerdy eco-astronaut well. A couple of the other crew members are over done as being total jerks. The music makes me want to gag though. Smoke pot, hug a tree and skip around lyrics detract from the scenes. Overall a great sci-fi classic for sure!

A good, original science fiction movie with decent special effects. The robots have human-like qualities though they do not look human. The music is pretty bad. I have always liked this movie since I was a kid. I bought it because it is never on television and I wanted to share it with my wife and kids.
