Though Anthony Braxton is known as one of the most experimental, forward-looking saxophonists in jazz, strongly influenced by avant garde classical music. Yet he's still found most often in the free jazz camp, as on SILENCE, the first half of this twofer, where he's joined by like-minded jazz compatriots Leo Smith and Leroy Jenkins. The most striking aspect of this disc is it's second half, the TIME ZONES album Braxton made in collaboration with electronic musician Richard Teitelbaum. The latter plays his modular synthesizer like a jazz instrument, if not exactly a tonal one, matching Braxton's avant garde blowing line for line in a display of atonal empathy.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars (out of 5) - ...TIME ZONES derives special value from Teitelbaum's improvisational skills as well as his remarkable ability to surround and enhance Braxton's reeds with electronic sounds...
