I am not sure where to even begin! This lens has sooo many pluses! The focal range is amazing!! The lens actually performs quite well throughout its focal range too! It is a bit soft @ 500mm, but nothing some local contrast enhancement in post can not fix! The focusing is quite quick being HSM, but not as fast as other HSM/USM lenses due to the focal range of course. The weight of the lens is actually a bonus and actually helps keep it steady when shooting! I like to carry a beanbag in my pocket when shooting with this lens!
It really is a phenomenal lens for the price point and focal range. I would say it performs best from 100-400mm and easily goes head to head with its competition and some.
Just be prepared if you purchase this lens to spend some time getting used to it before you will get amazing photos. It takes some skill and learning to properly use a lens of this focal length.

First - it's heavy. I'm a big guy, but this thing is heavy. You will need a rest or tripod.
On the other hand you can really reach out and touch someone with this lens. It works smooth and seems to hold the telephot position well, even if aimed straight down.
Reasonably fast at focusing, figuring how far out you are when focusing. And it is quiet, you won't scare the wildlife.
Sure there are faster Canon lenses, but at twice the cost, and without the range of this lens.
