I played a demo of Civilization IV and got hooked right away. There are a lot of details that make the game exciting, such as what kind of leader do you want to run your civilization (financial, industrious, religious, military, ect.) and what kind of technological advances do you want to choose to build your civilization foundation. There are a lot of things you have to take into consideration when playing which makes for a lot of strategic thinking. But after a while, the game loses it's luster. I play on a new 2GHZ Intel Core Duo IMAC and it runs great. But after you play for a while (esp. if it's a big map) and the gameplay starts to move faster, the game will run slower due to the other CPU civilizations. Sometimes the game just exited for no reason, it even happened when I just played the demo. The sound even messed up once and made a loud noise. I downloaded a patch but it still didn't fix all the bugs. The game also got old for me because a game usually takes 5 hours and once you win it loses it's appeal. Never played online so I don't know anything about that. Overall, I thought it is a great concept for a game and fun to play but for me, after beating it a couple times it gets old quick.

  Civ IV for the Mac

It's the same terrific game it was on the PC--detailed and delightful. The only problem is that I find it slightly harder to move around. It's mandatory to use the Go To function, since dragging out a path doesn't seem to work.

I love the speed and fun of the game altho even with a brand-new iMac--I mean, literally 2 weeks old--it started to get black drop-out spaces around the cities after several hours of play.

So, give the Mac a rest now and then, but definitely buy it!

On my 15 inch PowerBook G4, the first epic lasted 24 hr

I had an addiction to Alpha Centauri, this has some of the epic feel but more realistic opponents.
Over four days, I played at least 24 hours of this game, in a scenario. If you like strategy and detail, this is a fine choice. Update to version 1.74 after install. I have OS X 10.411. A couple of sound issues, and probably maxing out the 32 MB video card, but I like it just the same.

  GREAT GAME!
Review created: 02/26/08

The Good

* Intriguing new game play options plus even more-refined core gameplay
* Great presentation with powerful new 3D engine and great new soundtrack
* Much easier to fit into your schedule, but also offers many more strategic options
* Leonard Nimoy
* Warning: The highly addictive game play will make you lose sleep.

The Bad

* End games can sometimes still bog down, even though games are much faster to finish overall
* Faster pace seems to de-emphasize historical context somewhat
* Warning: The highly addictive game play will make you lose sleep.

If you're a fan of the incredibly addictive Civilization strategy series and haven't bought Civilization IV yet, you can probably stop reading now to go buy the game. Civ IV makes plenty of great changes and additions to just about every aspect of the hazardously habit-forming strategy blueprint that famed designer Sid Meier and his talented team have made famous the world over, from combat to diplomacy to research to production to winning the space race. And just like with previous games in the series, Civ IV's varied and addictive gameplay offers the same tantalizing siren's song that will tempt you to take "just one more turn." Fundamentally, this is a much-improved version of the same Civ games we've all been playing and desperately trying to put down for years. And that's far from a bad thing. In fact, it's an awesome thing.
