Though it's difficult many years after the fact to hear exactly how the Smothers Brothers managed to offend so many people in the early '60s, their cutting wit and irreverence remain as bracing as ever. With Dickie as the ever-patient "serious" folksinger and Tommy as the childlike dullard who does his best to upset the proceedings, the brothers managed to slyly poke fun at anything and everything without ever resorting to the direct attacks of lesser talents. Employing a stream-of-consciousness disregard for the status quo that predated and undoubtedly influenced the MTV generation, the Smothers Brothers revolutionized comedy by bringing a sense of spaced-out goofiness to what was formerly a straight-laced genre. THE BEST OF THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS includes most of the duo's well-known bits, including the iconic and still hilarious "Mom Always Liked You Best."
