I rented this movie years ago and enjoyed the interaction of the characters, as well as the contradictions, in traditions, family, and the delicate, sometimes not so delicate handling of mental retardation, death and inevitable change. Although attempts are made to maintain a sense of regularity, nothing remains the same. Change is good, change is bad. This movie approaches the subject with great sensitivity and allows the viewer a chance to make up his own mind rather than be forced to a sense of imposed morality. The movie is also an 'easy read'. One that I would recommend to those who are annoyed reading sub-titles. If your partner hates foreign movies because of this, they will be able to enjoy this one.

  "SHOWER" WITH ACTRESS SUI YONGQING.
Review created: 07/07/08

TOUCHING, ABOUT A MULTITUDE OF RELATIONSHIPS, AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH.

I AM AN AMERICAN FROM KENTUCKY WHO WAS DOING RESEARCH BEFORE A COUSIN VISITED CHINA.

I GOT THE MOVIE TO SEE THE ACTRESS SUI YONGQING, THE ADOPTED DAUGHTER OF CHING LING SOONG WHO BECAME MADAME SUN YAT SEN AND IS REFFERED TO BY SOME AS THE MOTHER OF CHINA. SUI WAS ALSO IN "THE LAST EMPEROR" AND "FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE."

"SHOWER" IS ABOUT A "CHALLENGED" MAN WHO HELPS HIS FATHER RUN A BATH HOUSE. AN ESTRANGED BROTHER COMES TO VISIT. NEWS COMES THAT THE BATH HOUSE IS TO BE DEMOLISHED. BUT THE FATHER DIES SUDDENLY AND THE BROTHER TRIES TO PUT THE MAN IN AN INSTITUTION,BUT HE IS UNCONTROLLABLE. THE MAN, CHALLENGED OR NOT, CONTINUES TO RUN THE BATH HOUSE, AS HE HAD ALWAYS DONE WITH HIS FATHER ALL HIS LIFE. ALSO ABOUT THE MANY RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CUSTOMERS.

THE TITLE "SHOWER" ACTUALLY COMES FROM (I THINK) A CHALLENGED CUSTOMER OF THE BATH HOUSE WHO LOVES TO SING IN THE SHOWER. HE ENTERS A NEIGHBORHOOD TALENT SHOW, BUT IS EMBARRASINGLY UNABLE TO SING A SINGLE NOTE AND ESCORTED OFF STAGE. THE CHALLENGED MAN FROM THE BATH HOUSE COMES UP WITH A NOVEL WAY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
