Album Notes Personnel includes: Jimmy Cliff, Orchestra OK Jazz. Jimmy Cliff was one of the most influential reggae singers ever. His sound--sweet yet soulful and sometimes political--has been admired by Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, and he help popularize the music all over the world. On this set, recorded in 1987 in Zaire but released in America in 1999, Cliff melds his style of the lighter side of reggae with contemporary African pop. The reggae beat is more implied than actually heard, as the songs are very much in the ebullient Afro-pop style, full of rumba-influenced rhythms and sparkling, popping guitars. "Shout for Freedom" has an infectious, party-all-night groove, punctuated by joyous bleats from a horn section. The slightly topical "Girls and Cars" has Cliff joyously putting down status-consciousness, but he doesn't forget to make you want to dance. This is less of a reggae album than a world beat album, but if you're a Cliff fan who wants to hear him in a different setting--or a fan of Central African pop who likes Cliff's voice and sweet reggae-pop--this SHOUT is worth a listen.
