Synopsis
Seth Kantner returns with a dazzling memoir about the Alaskan upbringing that lent such authenticity to his highly praised novel, ORDINARY WOLVES, about a boy coming of age in the Tundra. His parents and other like-minded individuals took to the wilds of Alaska in the 1950s, and Kantner skillfully traces that back-to-nature movement up through the present day, in the process cataloguing the skills he acquired during his boyhood. Fondly recalling the training he received from the Inuit population, Kantner recounts learning to fish, hunt, build sleds, and train snow-dogs. He also laments the changes wrought in the area by the advent of global warming, the snowmobile, and other effects of modernization. The lyricism of SHOPPING FOR PORCUPINE is amply reinforced by the color photographs--also taken by Kantner--that reveal the beauty of Alaska's wilds. Despite the iciness of his surroundings, Kantner's warmth for the subject makes this an irresistible read.
