Synopsis Touted alternately as the future of literature or as a hipster hack, Tao Lin is a writer dedicated to capturing the quirky qualities of the contemporary moment. In his novel SHOPLIFTING FROM AMERICAN APPAREL this translates into a semi-autobiographical chronicle of a young New Yorker who spends most of his life on the internet, chatting with friends, masturbating to internet porn, and occasionally swiping a coveted garment from American Apparel. Told in short declarative sentences and mimetic bursts of 21st-century twenty-something dialogue, Lin's novel nevertheless has moments of dry wit and surprising sadness.
