Shopgirl (DVD, 2006, Widescreen)

A clever well written romantic comedy reminiscent of the great movies from the 1940's....without being overly sappy and clearly a product of today's Hollywood. Steve Martin is perfect in this role and Clare Danes should have been nominated for an Academy Award...her performance is that good. This movie works on every level....unfortunately it did not strike a positive note with the general movie going public. That is the real shame here...that good movie making goes largely unnoticed. Thank GOD for DVD.

Based on star Steve Martin's novella, the film does a good job of engaging the viewer, despite the fact that the book's interior dialogue is so private and emotional. The acting is wonderful as well. It's a languid piece that does try hard to capture the feelings that heroine Mirabelle is experiencing. Here's what I would suggest to you: unlike me, please be sure you are buying the U.S. version. I was sold an Asian import by an unscrupulous seller (who never responded to emails) and it's lacking in quality--- first of all at each viewing, subtitles appear and you have to go through the machinations of turning it off. I also don't know what features we may not have gotten an (unexpected) import.

This movie is based on a novella written by the very talented actor, Steve Martin. The story chronicals the love life of a young lady, Mirabelle, who works at Saks Fifth Avenue in LA. The monotany of her everyday life becomes colored by a couple of particular love interests that enter her life unexpectedly. One is an artistic young man who lacks style and grace, and the other is an older gentlemen who is mature and well mannered. The beauty in this story evolves in the main character of Mirabelle and is portrayed quite well by the actress Claire Danes. She displays a wide range of emotions that one is able to identify with. If you enjoy stories that look into emotion, human relationships, and our general need for one another, then you will appreciate this film.

I liked the book, but didn't have much interest in the film. I picked it up one boring night and my husband and I settled in. We loved it. Claire Danes is so touchingly real in this movie. For those of us who have lived the single life in Los Angeles, this movie really does hit close to the heart. I loved it so much I bought it. I can't wait for my two grown daugthers to watch it with me. Worth seeing. And owning.

I saw a hacked up version of this movie on t.v., and I found myself intrigued but not being able to finish it. The acting is fantastic and the plot is a real life situation. Not steamy-sexy, but tastefully provocative. I'm glad I purchased this dvd; another great deal from ebay. It's a good watch!

This story is about a girl that works in a shop. Starts very boring. Stays boring, She picks up with a guy who could care less about her and only wants her for her sex. Then she meets Steve Martin because he is a customer and she starts dating him and he buys her things she has sex with him ALOT. And does not care to have a commentment with her just sex. He sees other people. While all this goes on the other guy gets hooked up with a band and they teach him how to treat a lady. So about a year of this goes on and finally Steve Martin uses her one time to many and she breaks up with him and about that time the other guy comes home and she goes back with him the end. NOT FUNNY AT ALL. Almost nasty.

Can you choose between perfection with no commitment and instability with commitment? This is the choice Mirabelle (Danes) is faced with in Shop Girl. Hauntingly ad, you feel for Mirabelle as she struggles with herself, her mental health, and her emotions for two men. Her ultimate choice may not have been your first choice, but it's the right choice for her.

A very impressive movie - a bit slow at times, but the overall story makes up for that.

Claire Danes character, a small town girl from VErmont, didn't know that moving to Los Angeles she would be living a very dull life in a very dull job at Saks Fifth Ave. This story was way too close to my experience moving to Los Angeles from Vermont. I so related to her nights coming home all alone to a miserable small apartment with dinner in the bag and eating alone. I thought this movie would be a great movie to settle down with on a cold winter night. I was very disappointed and couldn't believe she was so desparate for company she would date such a loser (looked like he needed a shower) and would be dragged into a relationship with an older man who appeared to be stalking her. When she went to his house for dinner, I decided this movie wasn't worth watching anymore. Maybe someday, I will give it a chance and watch it to the end.

First of all, let me admit that I assumed this would be a comedy. It wasn't.
The movie goes arounf three people, almost the classic love triangle. The center piece, female, is not a very interesting one. And we never learn much about the other two characters.
The movie is rated R for nudity.
This is not a relaxed saturday night comedy that you can watch with you kids.
To be fair, they gave a good picture of what's going on out in the dating pool.

I personally loved this movie. The first guy she meets is so funny(not sure his name)....Steve Martin is always good in whatever he is in. This movie is something that people can relate to...Watch it, you will love it!

I purchased this movie, without watching it first, because I'd been told that it was a really good movie. Sadly, I really didn't care for it. Watching it once was enough for me. I didn't like the roll that Steve Martin played, and that was the main reason I purchased the movie was because he was in it...guess I was too use to him being funny. To me the movie dragged on, and I just kept waiting for it to end. I recommend that you rent the movie before buying it. It may appeal to some, but I ended up reselling my copy...I couldn't see myself ever watching it again.

Not at all what I expected. Claire Danes as a drab and sad woman is unbelievable and Steve Martin as somewhat cruel and not at all funny is too much of a stretch to be enjoyable. Watching it once was enough for me.

Mirabelle: "I couldn't do all that."
Lisa: "How come?"
Mirabelle: "I'm from Vermont."

Cinematically, this film is up there with "Lost in Translation."

I bought this for my daughter, who just loves Claire Danes. Now I do too - she's hot, in a plain sort of way. Movie was pretty good, entertaining, not boring etc. but ended in a sort of disappointing fashion (to me anyway).

I loved everything about the movie. Its a movie about how real romance is. maribelle is a depressed artist wraped up in the bright lights or Los Angeles.

I saw the movie about two years ago and I loved it. I also don't get cable in my dorm so I am trying to create a great movie collection instead. Shopgirl is what I call a 'background' movie: a movie you put on while you are doing homework for background entertainment.

love this movie! the movie is actually pretty close to the book so that makes it even better. i dislike nothing about it. i purchased movie just before i finished reading the book. great price!

The DVD arrived in a timely fashion easy to track on the website and packaged very well. Ordered the same DVD through Amazon, unable to track on a website and had to send two e-mails before I found out they were going to re-imburse my money. E-bay is a lot easier to work with.

I really loved the story, love triangle it was. Girl faced with one of those tough, direction changing decisions. Like the actors too. Bought the movie as recommended by a friend. Great story especially if you can relate.

i loved this movie so i had to buy it. I never heard about it being released but i saw it on cable one day. this is definetly a keeper for rainy days.

I liked the movie, unlike some, because I could relate to it almost exactly. Clair Danes is a great actress, and she is just a plain girl from a small town in Vermont. I have seen Steve Martin in serious roles before, but in my opinion he did an excellent job as an actor in this movie.

I hear the book is much better, but I haven't been able to read it yet. I try to take a similar hurtful situation I was in and watch the movie to the great ending to see what happens when a person recovers from being manipulated and hurt. It is very entertaining for me, but not a movie for everyone.

I think it's a very good movie for people who need inspiration if they've ever made some bad choices in relationships and feel they can never get over it and be happy again.

well I finally saw the movie ShopGirl.

and as always... the book is better then the film version.

the movie was good but there are the details in the book ( such as the arguments with the parents about Ray, and the big move) that made the movie well a let down really. Claire Danes was good but it seemed effortless for her.

This was a VERY slow moving, boring, mediocre flick...made you wonder if it reflected Steve Martin's opinion of his own life or that of am alter ego. Not the usual uplifting, entertaining Steve Martin flick.
