Shogun (Complete Mini-Series) (DVD, 2003)

My husband love the movie. I buy it six or seven years ago on VHS, and he has play them so must, so that's why i order them on DVD.

I believe this was the most accurate mini-series ever made about Japan and the Samurai. This 10-hour, Golden Globe-winning saga was based on James Clavell's bestselling book and set in the 1700s. It was originally broadcast in September of 1980 as a 5-part, 12-hour miniseries on network television. The dialog contains a lot of spoken Japanese and you will learn some basic words during the movie. The main character, Pilot Major John Blackthorn (Richard Chamberlain) has a beautiful interpreter Lady Mariko (Yoko Shimada) throughout the movie as he learns the language and tries to survive in a brutal yet beautiful country and culture.

I highly recommend this movie to everyone. It is an epic that contains something for everyone, Action, Adventure and yes, even Romance.
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN: There is some adult language and situations in the movie.

All too often what is touted as a "Special Collector's Edition" leaves something to be desired when the product arrives, but this edition of the timeless mini-series Shogun was everything I could have hoped for. Beautifully packaged with impressive artwork, this DVD collection will be something I will treasure ( and probably will NOT be loaning out to family or friends)...this is an edition to covet! Each DVD has a select scene from the film as artwork enclosed in a durable case that unfolds to display the complete series. The production quality of this DVD collection is without peer and the audio quality is flawless and is available in mono as well as surround sound for the latest home theater systems. Thankfully, this edition is the full screen version, but would work well for those who prefer a letterbox display, requireing only a change in the set up of ones television to accomplish the desired format.
If you haven't seen this impressive mini-series in a long time, you really need not wait any longer. You'll be quite pleased with this edition and I am sure you'll agree this film is a masterstroke of story telling.

I enjoyed the mini series back when it aired in the 80's, and when I saw it available in dvd format I decided it was time to enjoy it again. A lot of study went into the writing and set design, although done prior to the digital special effects seen today (where they can make 20 extras look like an army of thousands) the producers had alot of characters in traditional costume and the samurai code of thought and honor is well depicted

A classic made for tv mini series that reveals a glimpse into the Japanese culture and underlines the dramatic differences between east and west. Great acting by Richard Chamberlain and the entire cast make this an excellent effort. Additionally, you'll learn a bit of Japanese.

Product was received in good condition, as expected. It was purchased as a birthday gift for my husband who enjoyed watching it again.

I have always wanted this movie and now I have it. I decided to buy it because the auction price was reasonable. It was also easier to find this on ebay than through a movie outlet.

I saw the series years ago, thought about it one day and decided to look for it on e-bay. Great series, worth the wait.

The quality of the picture in comparison to the original is phenomenal! I had just finished watching an OLD tape my mother had and decided to buy this one. WOW what a difference! SERIOUSLY!
I still hate that Anjinsaan says "domo" (very bad etiquitte) But now he says it so much more clearly and with better graphics, haha!
Seriously, though, toss the old VHS tapes!

The DVD Box Set was in Excellent Condition. I have been looking for this product for more than 2 years. The movie and musical score are excellent. The scenes are very vivid for a television production, but show an extremely detailed look at Japan during the 1600's. The characters are well represented by all the actors. The documentary (making of) is excellent as well. I had previously lost multiple bids for this product on numerous occassions. I am completely satisfied with this product. The seller is an asset to Ebay.

I like the whole movie. What's not to like about it? There's love, war, conspiracy, friendship. The guy goes from being a barbarian to being an important character in the government. Although at the end, he didn't leave the island, but why would he really want to?

I bought this five disc, tv mini series movie set, because it has always been one of my favorites. It has a great history lesson on Japans war lords, beautiful scenery, period costumes and lots of war action, with twists and turns and suprises in the plot. I even learned a few Japanese words to boot! Great movie!

Filmed in Japan with a Japanese cast (Toshiro Mifuni never disappoints) and Richard Chamberlain as the stranger who must adapt, and does. The language is authetic (my son is a Japanese student) and the culture portrayed as it was in the era. It is a visual feast for the eyes, has good script writers and the acting is solid. We bought it due to our son's interest in all things Japanese and for him to hear Japanese spoken. Highly recommend this mini-series if you enjoy exposure to true Japanese culture (it IS VERY different from ours), historical dramas and Richard Chamberlain.

The miniseries was mostly as I remembered it, it would have been better if there was narrated more, unless you read the book it is a little difficult to follow. But all in all it is an enjoyable movie.

This was a complete version as was filmed for the TV mini series. One that follows the book and not just the characters. It had extras about how,and where the film was made and the actors were chosen. That was special. We have wanted this movie for over a decade, but could not afford it, I was delighted when I won it on Ebay! Truly a movie that will be watched again and again. You even are taught some of the Japanese language and learn about their culture.

My husband wanted this for a long time but it was so expensive to purchase in the store. Purchased for a Christmas present for him, he is going to be so excited!

After reading the book at least 5 times, I just had to have the video. The picture quality of the DVD is good but, I question why it was deemed necessary to have English language "Closed Captions" on an English language video. This is very distracting and takes away a lot of enjoyment of the movie. There is an option in set-up to disable the captioning but, it doesn't work.

I don't know what the 9-hour version has, but the 12-hour one had everything that I remembered. It was like a good book - I couldn't stop watching. Beautiful photography and a timeless love story. Even though the series did not have the subtitles for the lines in Japanese, we can catch on through the context and the narrated scenes. I highly recommend the 12-hour version.

Honestly. It's Shogun. Best movie ever. I don't know what else to say about it other than I watched all 4 DVDs the day I recieved it in the mail, and I'll probably watch it again this month. Richard Chamberlin for the win.

The quality of acting is superior...too bad today's actors don't measure up. If you watch this mini-series, you will never regret it!
