Album Notes On her ninth solo album (but the first to be recorded in her living room), singer-songwriter Christine Lavin spins one perceptive story after another about real life with all its humor, embarrassment, disappointment and joy. Lavin's songs are lucid and straightforward, her voice light and sweet, backed by acoustic instrumentation including herself on guitar. Her subjects range from an American couple with 25 seconds to view the Mona Lisa at the Louvre ("Two Americans in Paris"), to an all-knowing, wisecracking fish ("Snackin'"), to a patient serenading her surgeon ("Music to Operate By"): "Good morning doctor, I trust you are sober/I've been dreading this encounter for a long time/My best friend is a lawyer/No, not in malpractice/But he's got friends of friends who are, so please keep that in mind." Lavin rarely abandons her optimistic, witty outlook on life and its complications. Even the most poignant tracks, "As Bad As It Gets," and "The Scent of Your Cologne," are gently uplifting, determined to find light in the darkness.
