The Shining (DVD, 1999, Kubrick Collection)

The Shining : Stanley Kubrick : 1980 : 5/5 : This scared the living sh-t out of me the first time I watched it. Excellent acting on behalf of arch-nut Jack Nicholson.

The Shining is Stanley Kubrick's vision of what he thinks the Stephen King novel should be. It stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall who are a married couple along with their son Danny who must caretake over a secluded summer resort in Colorado. The resort has had a violent past, with a former caretaker murdering his wife and two daughters before killing himself years earlier. Now Jack, Wendy (Duvall), and Danny must spend the next five months without any outside contact with the rest of the world. Cabin Fever slowly sets in, and the evil spirits of the hotel don't help Jack much either. Jack Nicholson does a marvelous job portraying this man who is hearing and seeing the former patrons and dwellers of the hotel, and is slowly heading towards insanity.

When I first saw this movie, I didn't care for it much. That was mainly because the first time I had seen it, it was edited for TV. And there are several things that don't match the book, namely the ending. For a more true to the book version, I suggest Stephen King's The Shining, which is almost as good. After several years though, I bought the Kubrick version, and I was truly impressed. It was like I'd never seen the version that was edited. Plus I was much younger when I first seen it, and sometimes you think a movie is better than it is when you're younger (Friday The 13th Part whatever). But conversely, you don't appreciate some movies until you're older. A good case for me is this movie as well as Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. I thought they were both strange when I had first seen them, and now I love them both. They're good stories with different twists.

What I especially like about this version of The Shining is the camera work. The opening shots of the mountains are absolutely breathtaking, as are the other aerial shots of the resort and the shots of the maze. And the shots of Jack coming into a room, especially when Shelley Duvall is behind the typewriter are chilling. But my favorite shot is when Jack is locked in the canned goods locker, with the shot from underneath him. It captures Jack at his menacing best.

Also, the music definitely fits this movie perfectly. It keeps foreshadowing Jack's slow climb to lunacy. It's actually spine tingling at times.

Although it's a little off from the book, it's definitely a great movie. I now prefer this version to Stephen King's version (although I like that one too, it's closer to his novel) because of the great acting, music, and camera work. It has stood the test of time, and Stanley Kubrick has made this movie his own. It is truly a horror classic. Anyone who likes horror movies must have this movie in their collection.

Jack Nickolson is a real trip in the movie.

Cat the man who was the carekeeper that was killed with the ax in the end.

He is one of the greatest actors of all time and should have received and should have been nominated one of the worlds greatest actors of all times.

Shelly and Danny are so sweet and wonderful movie just pulls you in right into the beautiful scenery and chilling adventure.

I bought this movie because it's a Stephen King film. One of his most finest movies ever!!! I like it because it's unique. Jack Nicholson is so evil looking in this intense thriller of horror. This movie I would rate as excellent because you never know what to expect in the film. Because it's an 80's film it's certainly one of Stephen king's classics. I would recommmend this movie to any horror addict like myself.

my wife and i saw this movie a long time ago and we look for the movie at stores with no luck when i looked on ebay there were a lot of the movie but i look for the lowest cost with the lowest s/h and that is way ebay is the way to go and i have found now the all the stores have the movie but not a low as i payed for

AHHH, WHAT CAN I SAY. ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTORS.. I LOVE THIS MOVIE. AND THIS ORIGINAL IS FAR BETTER THEN THE ONE THEY TRIED TO RE-DUE. THIS IS AN AAA+++ MOVIE.. I bought "The Shining" DVD for my granddaughter for Christmas. I liked the movie back when it came out and she wanted a "thriller". It was still shrinkwrapped, new, and in perfect condition.

My daughter wanted to see this classic film and I thought of Ebay first to see if it was available and sure enough it was. I always check Ebay first and 99% of the time I find what i am looking for. The product was exactly as descibed and we enjoyed the film quality.

This movie was great because of its symbolism and excitement that carried through until the end. I find horror films today to be more amusing than scary, but The Shining packs a classic punch of raw entertainment and great acting from Jack Nicholson. I hadn't seen the movie until recently, but even so, it is one of the best movies i have ever seen with some of the most unforgettable scenes on film.
