If you love the Stones you will love this. It was an excellent rock dvd on a legendary band. The only negative thing to say is it seemed a bit overproduced and way too scripted. If you don't have it get it for a good used price like i did, rent it, check it out of the library or whatever. If you like the Stones and Scorcese then get it by all means it. If not catch it at some point watch it.

Extraordinaire! Great Rolling Stones DVD presentation. But Too long and boring introduction trailers. Sometimes the motion picture doesn't run, because of trailers. I bought it because I'm Rolling Stones fan since I was a kid

I not a fanatic about the Stones, but I do love Keith Richards guitar work. In this video, it starts out with what I consider worthless time, about the first 15 minutes perhaps more. But when the concert starts, it is worth having to wait for. These guys played so long, I was about to stop the video, but couldn't as each song was fantastic. Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Charlie do an incredible workout and the camera work is great, excellent coverage, not much waste. I bought it based on a short clip I saw at a local box retail store. I purchased at a great price through Half.com, thus super worth the buy.

Still the best rock and roll band in the world!

Saw this at I Max and knew I had to get it as soon as it appeared on DVD - was a fantastic Xmas present. Stones on top form. Great filnming - thank you Marty. I loved the tracking shot at the end. Sympathy for the Devil will always be a favourite. Great to see the Stones are still rocking and obviously enjoying it. A must for any Stones fan. Have seen them live many times - at O2 London in 2007 x3 - 2nd row twice and 1st row for the last show - a never to forget experience as this film illustrates. Only negative is that the track Shine a Light is not included.

ROCK AND ROLL!! Put Scorcese together with the Stones and you have a picture. I saw it originally in I-Max which was astounding. Mick Jagger really does work his tushy off. You have to give him credit after all these years

Shine a LIght DVD The Rolling Stones
Review created: 11/06/08(updated 11/06/08)

The Rolling Stones have been around for a long time now, and while you can see their age on their faces, you'd never know it by their performance and energy on the stage! This is a great movie/concert for any Stones fan. It is also great to see a band that you know are truly enjoying playing music together. The almost continuous smile on Keith Richards' face, Mick Jagger's ability to still rock the audience and the enjoyment seen in the rest of the band,Buddy Guy, Jack White, the backup players and singers make this concert a joy to watch. The Stones will always rock on! Truly enjoyable!

This dvd is ok if rolling stones fan i like it better than most other dvds they put out, but it is missing something. Martin does a great job with camera angles but puts great songs like paint it black in special features. If you didnt know to look there you would never know it was there. Not their best dvd I reccommend their circus dvd.

Although I like the Rolling Stones I couldn't seem to get what the movie was about. Following the stones around? I fell asleep while it was playing. Had to watch it again and I still don't get it.

If you're a Stones fan, you need to get this video! I think the "most elegantly wasted human being" is just awesome!! If you don't know who that is, don't buy the video, cause you probably won't like or appreciate this video. I think this captures the Stones and will be great to look at when they finally stop touring. I recommend it for any TRUE STONES FAN!

At The Top Of Their Game
Review created: 07/16/08

"Shine a Light" is Martin Scorsese's second real concert film after 1978's "The Last Waltz", which by now is generally acknowledged as a masterpiece. I really hope we will see more concert films from Scorsese in the future, because "Shine a Light" is further excellence from him. If all, or even a significant number of concert films were filmed with such skill and exuded such energy, there would be far more of them made and far more released theatrically.

"Shine a Light" is a concert film. I'm not sure I'd call it a documentary on the Rolling Stones so much as a filming (a brilliant filming) of an especially good concert they played recently. Scorsese is smart enough, however, to use interviews and clips from all stages of the Stones' career for purposes of humor and even commentary on various aspects of music and the music business, as well as the band itself.

Your average Rolling Stones fan waiting to see a Rolling Stones concert and who isn't a fan of film probably will be bored during the film's opening scenes, but for those interested in film, they provide a fascinating glimpse into the marriage of live music and film-making, which doesn't happen as much as it should. It's also quite an intimate look at the Stones as a bunch of people, exposing them in the same sort of way the non-concert scenes in "Gimme Shelter" did. Then again, how much of it is real and how much is an act is really the essential question that we will forever be asking about this band.

"Shine a Light" isn't a document of an important historical event like Scorsese's "The Last Waltz" or the Maysles Bros' "Gimme Shelter" was as a Rolling Stones film, so one shouldn't expect that sort of greatness from "Shine a Light". What one should expect is a great concert, filmed with great skill, tasteful guest appearances that do nothing but add to the music, and a gorgeous film interspersed tastefully with archive footage chosen carefully and played at just the right moments.

The Stones and Scorsese are on top form here, making this a memorable and exciting concert film and the sort of marriage of film-making and live music that really should happen more often.
