Though there are hundreds of holiday albums to suit just about every conceivable musical taste, country's trademark embrace of hearth, home, and old-time religion has always made it particularly well suited to Christmas records. SHIMMY DOWN THE CHIMNEY is no exception, as it collects a particularly warm and fuzzy selection of down-home chestnuts from the Capitol Records Nashville catalog. Acts from several different decades are showcased here, from crossover superstar Glen Campbell, who contributes a soothing "I'll Be Home for Christmas," complete with orchestral backing, to bluegrass diva Alison Krauss, who here goes the modern-pop route with the funkified title track. Shedaisy delivers a super-slick dance-floor-ready "Deck the Halls," while Willie Nelson checks in with his melancholy 1979 classic "Pretty Paper." A compilation that touches on an extremely wide variety of country holiday music, SHIMMY DOWN THE CHIMNEY is one of those rare Christmas discs that provides something for the whole family.
