Shenandoah (DVD, 2003)

The five-star rating I'm giving this is for the acting, plot, beautiful scenery, historical setting, and the entertaining, if hokey, dialogue. I grew up watching this classic Civil War drama and must admit it still captures my heart every time I see it.
This classic has something for everyone, with a fine mixture of comedy, drama, romance, and action. It is very tragic, but it clearly captures the harsh conditions faced by the innocent civilians during America's bloodiest war. The dvd has a fine picture and sound quality. It seems to me that they should've at least included a "making-of" documentary for such a famous classic.

I've studied the Civil War ever since I was old enough to read, and even though this movie is historically inaccurate, it remains one of the best Civil War films ever made. I highly recommend it to all history buffs and classic movie fans.

My dad introduced me to this movie when I was a boy. It was our father son time. So to me this movie represents more than just a movie. Its to a time spent with my dad. And its a great classic movie. I had forgotten about it, when I saw it here on E-Bay, I had to have it.
Its a western set in during the civil war. It depicts the general life on a farm in war time and how it affected all involved. Even those who tried to not be involved. How a mans sons can get swept into duty, some willingly , others unwillingly. How in those times the bond between father and his kids was put above all else. And what a real man will do to protect them. I would recommend this those who like classic movies. Its not the shootem up -large explosion or special effects movie, but it has a good message.

Very good movie, probably one of Jimmy Stewart's best in my opinion. A classic story of someone who get'ws dragged into a situation over which he has no control and no interest in being in. His family is torn apart and he is torn in a mental/spiritual way. I had seen this movie years ago and recently my wife saw it and stated she really liked it and I started hunting for it on E-bay

This movie is an old favorite. I saw it again on TV and I had to have it. It is a great portral of the Civil War and how it affected people. A real tear jerker.

I bought Shenandoah,because I love westerns,and because I'm a Jimmy Stewart
and a John Wayne fan.The dvd is brand new and therefore in excellent shape.
I've seen this movie on t.v. recently and knew I wanted it for my western
collection.I have a couple of movies with both John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart
in them together,and I just really enjoy them.

I would recommend this DVD to those who are Jimmie Stewart fans. It gives an interesting perspective on the Civil War. Without laying blame on either side or dealing with the political aspects of this horrible war, the movie shows the effect of the war on our citizens. By showing one family, the directer gives a brief overview on the changes the war had on the era.
The photography and production was above par for this time in film-making. Acting, with the exception of the esteemed Mr. Stewart, is average, but well cast.
Overall, a nice old film. If you wish an addition to your 'old movie collection', this is considered a classic and well worth a few bucks.

my husband absolutely loves this movie! every time it's on tv he records it so i decided to buy a copy and send it to him since he's overseas and can't watch tv. it's definitely his favorite movie.

I bought this movie because I love this older western/war movie. It tells of a family that decides not to join either side of the Civil War, but end up fighting battles of their own with the Yankees and Rebels anyway. An excellent Jimmy Stewart classic. And if you are a "To Kill A Mockingbird" fan, "Jem" plays the youngest son in the family.

My father took me to see this movie at the theater when it came out in 1965 since we both have always had an interest in the Civil War. I cried and cried during the sad parts!! Something made me think of it recently and I could not believe it was available on DVD, brand new for under $5.00! It was shipped to me quickly and it is excellent! Great sound, great color, and a wonderful family movie with Jimmy Stewart at his best. It's certainly not among his best known films but has special meaning and memories for me.

I had been looking for a long while for some items that I just could not find anywhere else. At someone else suggestion I looked on ebay and was able to find just what I had been looking for. So far my experince on ebay has been good. I have got everthing I have ordered , paypal is a great way to pay . The products have been just as they were advertised to be as well. A real classic from 1965 with James Stewart. Set in Virginia during the Civil War. A family is divided by the war and wants no part of either side of the war. This is one of my all time favorite movies. You can't go wrong by putting it in the DVD player and curling up on the sofa with your significant other. Not a chick flick, just good entertainment!!

Movie purchased for classroom use in an American History class. Students loved it. Something students can related to when studying The Civil War.

Jimmy Stewart gives a wonderful performance in this movie which is a story about a family during the Civil War.

James Stewart at his cranky, fatherly best. Set in Virginia precisely 100 years before the Vietnam War, a conscientious objector (Stewart) pits himself against the Union establishment in a bid to sit out the war and keep his family safe. While he disagrees strongly with the concept of slavery, this Virginia farmer refuses to acknowledge that the Civil War even exists - so long as the participants kindly stay off his land and leave his bevy of boys out of it. But, when the widower's youngest is kidnapped from a fishing hole by Yankee soldiers, Papa Bear goes all but Postal on them in a fruitless pursuit to find and bring the boy home.

One of the best Jimmy Stewart movies I have ever seen. It is not your typical western, but it does have an all-star cast. I can never watch this movie without getting emotionally pulled in. I highly recommend this to anyone that has not seen it or is a Jimmy Stewart fan. Just be prepared to be pulled into the story and to ride the up's and down's as Jimmy Stewart rides trying to find his mistakenly taken son.

This is one of the greatest movies ever made starring Jimmy Stewart. The acting was superb of course not to mention the action and scenery. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves quality to the nth. degree.

I'm so glad they are putting such great old films on DVD's. Shenandoah did not get the credit it deserved. I live in the Shenandoah Valley and although the movie was film in another state they came close to making it look like Virginia. A great story line that kept with history. There were people living in Virginia who oppose the war but was caught up in it because they lived right in the middle of it. We cannot judge history because we were not there, we can only learn from it. Shenandoah gives us that chance.

I watched this with my Dad as a child. My daughter is in a middle school class where the teacher asks them to review the movies they have seen over the weekend each Monday. She watched this with us and liked it so told her teacher and class about it. He had never heard of it so she had me order it for him for Christmas. He was tickled to death and promised to watch it. . .haven't heard yet.

It was a GREAT story of a single father raising his sons and one daughter and it was refreshing to see how each of them had so much respect for their father. You don't see that in today's world very much anymore so it was nice to see a movie that portrayed such wonderful family traditions.
