Widescreen and the evils of Sony

I bought this dvd because I remember liking the movie when I was younger. Also there's the Sony Factor. For those who don't know about the Sony Factor it affects many dvds that were originally released by Columbia Pictures including this one, The Fan, Money Train, Idle Hands, and many others. The old Columbia releases had both widescreen and fullscreen versions on double-sided discs. Then sometime around 2004-2005 Sony took over Columbia's catalog and wrecked everything. While a couple of these old titles (Christine, Body Double) got nice new widescreen special editions, the rest got the shaft. They were re-issued as single side dvds with fullscreen only versions that went directly to the cheap bins. For movies like Sheena and The Fan that is a shame, as they were shot in scope 2.35 so you miss about the movie with these fullscreen abomanations. I got into dvd in the first place to see movies in the proper aspect ratio, Sony doesn't care. Even worse, all these re-issues carry the same UPC and bar-codes, making ordering from online dealers a gamble. I bought this off ebay after contacting the seller to be sure it had the ws version on it, and another online site which shall remain un-named cuz they did refund me after a long hassle, had one listed as ws and it wasn't.
As for the movie, it has held up well and was quite enjoyable. Things made as much sense as possible for a movie with a woman who psychicly talks to animals. Seeing this in widescreen for the first time was great as well, I had no idea there was so much missing from those old cable broadcasts. Also it's nice to have the FS version for a couple scenes where you might want to see little more detail, like say, Tanya naked under the waterfall. :) Glad I found this here as this disc was one of the last to come out from Columbia before Sony decimated their catalog. My Sony boycott is in full effect (see some of their new offerings that don't even have menus. I can make better dvds with Nero than Sony's treatment of cheap catalog titles.) so it feels good knowing they get nothing from this sale. Seek out this WS disc if interested in the movie, or rumor is there's an HD widescreen version that has played on some HD-TV channels and will soon be on a torrent site or 2, with bootleg dvds to follow here I'm sure. Since I haven't seen this HD version I can't comment much on it, hopefully it will be in the proper 2.35 ratio. I have seen the MonstersHD version of Monster Squad which was cropped from 2.35 to 1.78 for HD braodcast. I would guess that the HD version will look better than this dvd. Even though this is anamorphic, the print is old and very grainy in dark scenes. Most daylight scenes look very nice, but some night time ones are absolutely horrible and those with HD set-ups will hate it. I don't have HD anything but the grain was over-whelming on my standard Sony TV set with 16:9 mode. The irony is not lost on me, I bought the set before Sony went bad.:)
