The Shape Shifter by Tony Hillerman (2006, Unabridged, Compact Disc)

Great new book by Tony Hillerman who has won all sorts of awards for his mystery writing. Shape Shifters are evil spirits who constantly change their shape just as the protagonist in this mystery does. Joe Leaphorn is retired and has plenty of time to track down the "magical" rug, an artifact woven on the "Trail of Tears". Great back story that reveals a lot of Indian culture. Great read or great listen which kept me interested while commuting back and forth to work.

I have been a fan of Tony Hillerman for a long time. This book was very interesting and enjoyable. It is not a fast paced story, after all Leaphorn is retired and moving slower. You know early on who the 'bad guy' is, but the mystery is how he is going to be apprehended. There were a couple of loose ends left hanging, but not enough to detract from the story. I like the unabridged versions of Hillerman's books as I am interested in the 'Indian Culture" that is woven into the story. It is often left out of the abridged versions. This book is worth the time.

I have read the book twice, but listening to it revealed aspects I hadn't been aware of before. Especially helpful was the pronunciation of the many Navajo words and phases. I may never be able to say them correctly, but now I know what they are supposed to sound like. Another aspect I enjoy is that the different voices of the narrator added personality to the characters beyond what can be gotten from reading. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and one I will repeat for other books.

This was purchased for our tribal library, funding from the Institutes of Museum and Library Services Enhancement Grant. The grant is specific to the elders of the tribal community but will be used by all patrons of the library.
